i have a 95 6.5 td five speed. after 22-2300 rpms, in third, fourth and worst of all fifth, i start to lose power and start smoking black waaaay too much. from there it takes a million years to pick up speed and rpms. i had the light checked and it called for a wastegate soleniod, so i replaced it and still no luck. its a little better but not much. the light is still coming on and i still lose power in the engine. annnd i had an ip put on in late november, so im pretty sure its not that. any other suggestions please!!!

With the engine running pull on the vac acuator, it shouldn't move. If it does it could be a cracked vac line or the vac pump.

check all the hoses and tubing for leaks. also check the vac pump to make sure it's working properly. Also the wastegate actuator.

whats the vac actuator? and the wastegate actuator is the the little cylinder lookin thing hooked to the vacum line on my turbo?

Sorry, I meant the wastegate actuator, and yes it's the thing attached to the turbo with the rod.

There is not actually a vacuum solenoid trouble code. Its just turbo boost error code. And the vacuum pump, vacuum solenoid, vacuum lines and wastegate acuator could cause the issue. You lost vacuum to the actuator which holds the wastegate shut to build boost. Need to check vacuum at the actuator at idle should be about 15".

The vacuum lines crack real easy, best to replace them with flexible lines.

is that fifteen psi? and i checked the wastegate actuator and it works. when i had the truck checked the vacum was reading at sixty some percent so could that be the pump then and im just not getting enough power to open the wastegate?

Welcome to The Truck Stop, iluvdrt95! This here is the best place on the web for you to learn about your truck and meet up with the best people around (some of whom you've already been talking to ...)

1] Help us out a bit, before we start helping you; fill out your signature with details of your truck and what you've done to it so far. Click on the signature link (in my signature) and it will take you to yours. We need to know what modifications you have already made - it helps with diagnosis.

2] When you have a minute, click on the Diagnostic Checklist in my signature; when it comes up, highlight and copy it, then come back to this thread and paste it into a new post. Fill in as many details as you can, answer as many questions as you know how to... it will let us see and hear through your eyes. Diagnosing truck problems over the internet requires some really good information.

3] The 6.5 Technical Library in my signature has some great information in it; you might want to read through there when you get the chance, so you can learn more about your truck.

Now - thoughts for you to consider...

- Buddy is right - the code you got (DTC 78) just means 'boost out of range' ... it means your computer is calling for x amount of boost and your engine is actually getting a different amount - more or less - than was requested.

- AK and leo (NVW) are usually right, too ... your symptoms all sound like too little boost, probably caused by a cracked line to the wastegate controller at your turbo.

- your wastegate is normally open ... meaning you get very little boost; when yout computer calls for more, the solenoid you replaced OPENS, letting vacuum get through from your vac pump to the wastegate, which pulls the wastegate CLOSED. A turbo with a closed wastegate develops boost pressure.

If the vac line is cracked, it can't get a complete vac circuit to the wastegate, meaning the gate stays open a crack... too little boost is then developed.

- You need to invest in a cheapie vacuum gauge - they're like $10-15 ... you should normally get ~20" vac at the pump, and no less than 15-18" at the wastegate actuator. With a gauge, you can trace your vac circuit and see where the problem really is.

Welcome iluvdrt95. personally I would put in a boost gauge, turbo master, and forget the vaccuum stuff....
Plus the codes need to be cleared in order for the ECM to the engine run right.

Side note where in Pa are you????

alright i feel like a total idiot because which ever genius told me to chack my air filter was right. i had a mouse nest takin up almost half the filter and a little chunk was chewed away so air couldnt get through. the little bit i cleaned it out it ran better, got the new filter in today and she runs like a top! thanks for everyone who helped me with the vacuum thing, even though that wasnt it, i learned a good bit about my truck! you guys are great!

p.s. joe im right smack dab in the middle of allentown and filthadelphia, in telford country. were you from pa?

I am bout 45 NW of Sharon PA. I was just over at the KME plant in Nesquhoning (sp) 2 weeks ago to drive home our new fire truck.
