Rubber gasket question...

Installed my new fuel heater element today...well just got done with it.

The new stanadyne element did not have a new rubber O ring & the old one was not re-usable. So I improvised with a rubber thermostat gasket I found in the garage. It fit fine & sealed up good...is that rubber gasket gonna hold up or will the diesel fuel eat it up?

TIA

how much was just the heater, I got a complete fuel manager from gm for 200 even came with heater and wif sensor and a filter, but all I needed was the heater but nobody had it

Well I kinda figured that this question was taboo...lol!

I did manage to hunt down a cross reference table for O ring type compatibilities that did suggest if the material was used in a glycol service that it would also be suitable in hydrocarbon fuel service. Made me feel a little better, but not 100% confident.

I am going to call my local Stanadyne shop where I got the heater tomorrow & see if they can get me the correct O ring, we'll see...

Nitrile O-rings will work and are what is commonly used with oils but viton would be a plus if it's available. Greg, if you could get the OD, ID, and cross section for it, I could maybe get a couple from work if we stock that size and since I'm right off of I80 and rte 45 (work) I'd bet we could easily meet up one afternoon around 3:30-4:00.

Thanks Mike!

Right now I am working 12 noon till midnight or later depending what is shaking here...

I will get the size & also still want to place a call to the Standyne dealer, have not had a chance to do that yet working this crazy shift.

I will get back to ya Mike thanks again

I can always sneak out for a bit Greg so all you would need to do is leave 10 min early and meet me in our parking lot. I'm on 191st between LaGrange and Harlem.

Isn't the problem the possibility of a % mix of biofuel that will attack "rubber or latex compounds" its not just that it is a hydrocarbon "oil". And why they went to Viton material. Nitrile is vulnerable to bio mixes too. If just a mix probably will last for a good while if mix is low % ????

Use Viton, Teflon, or Nylon seal materials for safety.

Many stations around here have the disclaimer sticker "may contain 10% or more biofuel" similar to the disclaimer sticker about ethanol. May just be a liability thing but better safe than sorry.

I've so far got 2 possibles from work Greg. I bet I'll have more at home when I get a chance to check around the shop but it might take a few days...

Guys, I met up with Greg mid day today and I gotta tell you that is one SWEET Tahoe! Sounds great too. That's a real nice companion to the pickup!
