Bought this to throw on the 96. Eventually I want to put propane tank in place of spare tire and with the camper in the bed I don't have many good choice to carry the spare tire. So, this is what I'm looking into. A roof rack, it will hold the spare up there and very short items behind and under the camper. When the camper is off I'll have full use of it.
This came off a 2006 Tahoe, but one off a Avalanche or crew cab might be better. Im going to have to trim alittle of the back end of the Tahoe's.
I think it looks pretty good what do you guys think?

Also, I hate the thought of drilling holes in the roof. I'd like to make a bracket that go's into the door jam to hold it. Any ideas on that? maybe I can use hold down brackets from some other brands kit (like Thule ?).

I tried roof mounted storage and roof mounted spare tire. Lost mpg. Other than that its fine until you are sore one day on the road and have a flat. That day sucked. When I got rid of the '99 truck and got my 01 burb I had appreciation for the previously hated idea of under body spare. That's best for dealing with frequent bed use IMO.

I don't like putting holes in a good roof either. The sliding bracket are nice. I would get a set from the junkyard, loose the crossbars and make something to better hold the tire if you go that route. Then it's easily changed back if you don't like it after a while.

I have the camper in back now so a tire up there might be more aerodynamic?:hihi:
Im thinking more about making some bracket that go in door jam and up to rack. Kind of like the LED light bar bracket we see on trucks now.

I had look at that style, but not from the HMMWV. My proble is the hang over on the rear also. Thought about mounting it in the front bumper for half a second :nonod:
I think i'm stuck with this location or a bed side mount:33:

Where do I find one of these?

Been looking but can't find one for sale.

Swing down tire rack, hitch mounted.

I was convinced I was buying one of those spare tire carriers until I saw it was $2,000. That is next on my build list is my own version of that having seen a couple of them fail, I have my own theory on building it, unless 1 of you guys have a used one of those you want to sell me for.

That is a cool spare carrier, Leroy. http://www.hitchsource.com/hitchmou...p-33591.html?gclid=CPSDxqWao8ECFYqBfgodIHcAlA

I have seen them on back of rv's. Google search: rv spare tire carrier. This was 1st response I got.

Crud didn't notice that, sorry.

I meant to say before if you made the roof mount out of the slider pieces, you could have it at the rear for better air flow when not using the camper then slide it up front for when the camper is there. Yeah it wouldn't hurt air flow with camper on, probably help.

This is the closest thing I have found that is under $100.

I say build your own.
You read my mind. I have some parts coming in tomorrow. Some off the shelf parts from Walmart and Harbor Freight. Less than $80ish and I think I'll be good.

And maybe this. Depends on the height of the tire.

Looks like plan B is in action.

Same idea, but different. He built his. I could, but don't feel like it. I actually got all the parts tonight. Got home to realize the extension is to big to fit the hitch portion, but its an easy fix. Just need a short piece of 2" square and I'll be set.
Got to Harbor Freight and the extension was on sale for $14.99 plus 20% coupon and some free zip ties and a free flashlight! oh boy!
I'll post some picture tomorrow.
