Have 2 #14057299 heads that have been shaved .030. These are 1983 fine thread 6.2 heads.I called several machine shops that said new factory size is 3.853 and also stated that .010 is maximum to shave.I measured the heads as told by placing a micrometer on the valve cover gasket flange and head gasket machined face getting a reading of 3.823 difference from stock =.030. I am asking if any members have used heads shaved this much with good success? I am worried about possible cracking. These are the original heads and 660 block allegidely high nickel cast iron, checked the casting numbers and knew the previous owner. I think the excess shaving was due to maching the heads with precups installed, during a partial precup replacement. We all know how wrong that is! The head work was done approximately 5 years ago and sat on the shelf. Last month i decided to assemble the motor and upon checking and measuring i discovered the excessive shaving. Also the guides, exhaust seats, valves, springs are all new and the heads are not cracked and have been pressure tested, lotta dollars, so you see i can only hope for some good news. This is a non-turbo engine, just want it all original and restored. All input is very much appreciated and thanks to all members and staff of THE TRUCK STOP. SMOKEY, PROUD MEMBER.

The danger is in the shaved precups...thin thin.. They like to crack even being OEM thickness.

Yeah, the 'right way' to mill an IDI head is with cup OUT, then cut the pockets in the head and fit each cup again.

The 6.2/5 heads like to split between the valves usually. If you're good here, then, good..

That said, "I'd" run 'em on a N/A application IF there were new pre-cups installed.

.030 will bump the compression a bit too. So going turbo later may be out of the question...
