I currently have the air manifold out and am replacing it with one without the EGR. while I got it out I thought I'd revisit the need for item seven. I read that it acts as an air muffler AND Helmholz resonator. apparently sound shockwaves disrupt airflow enough to effect performance, I can't tell the difference and if it did everybody have one. Since I'm removing the EGR restriction does anybody think putting it back on would make a difference?

Helmholtz resonators do have performance applications in normally aspirated intakes if properly employed.

Since this does not apply to forced intakes systems (IE: turbocharged), there is no performance benefits but it is simply used as a resonant chamber to alter audio properties.

Hence, the propensity for gents to refer to the long tube on a turbo intake duct as the "muffler"....:)

I would doubt that GM went any further in designing the chamber on your NA 6.5 other than to quite down "intake honk" and make it more acceptable to the NVH team.

Am far from an expert on any performance aspects of the part, so will share my experience in terms of a resonator and the intake system.

When I got the Burb, it had an AFE conical filter setup (badged as CAI, but in reality was WAI given it was open to the engine compartment) and the cabin drone was unpleasant above 60 MPH to the point I was just about to pull the trigger on a 30” FTE resonator as I thought the drone was from the 4” exhaust. Prior to messing with the exhaust, I installed a K47 box with 4” silicon pipes and was stunned that the drone dropped several DB (measured by ear) and the drone is now acceptable.

The surprise to me was how the 6.5’s intake created drone as my ‘other’ rig did *not* experience this effect when I installed a similar open conical filter.

Remove it and you will be sorry, the drone or intake noise will drive you insane. I removed mine on my van and the next day, it went back on, couldn't hear myself think on the highway. Turbo, you don't need it, N/A, its mandatory.

I've been running without it for months, the EGR is removed and the port capped off, maybe that and the carbon build up affected the acoustics. Leroy sent me a replacement manifold without the EGR port. I'll try it with and without the lobes and let you guys know
