What is involved in removing the lower intake manifold? Today was mostly raining and by the time it stopped I only managed to get the upper rad hose, upper manifold and glow plug controller off with several bolts.

Any precautions while I'm working on it as well? Aside from obviously not letting anything fall into the intake

Its easy. Best tips would be, to pressure wash before tear down, a shop vac is a good thing to have around(suck up loose things as they apear), masking tape(the wide stuff, put over intake ports and such).

Its about as easy as it gets, just be clean and take your time, change your fuel lines while your there.

you'r half done allready, now blow the whole area around and under the intake clean.take of the intake covers 6 bolts + the turbo hose clamp.remove the cover. remove the vac line.Unseat the heater hose coupler at the crossover, pull the connector free after removing 2 nuts on the aluminum bracket.remove alt bracket if you have one, take the 2fuel filter and harnass bracket bolts and push filter back a bit. take all the bolts on the lower intake plenum out[remember wich goes where, lift the injector lines up a bit with a screwdriver so you can slide the hold down brackets out from underneath, and take the plenum off.
that just about covers it i think.

Yeah, not that bad, even on my rust bucket. Becareful of the heater core line than has the snap connect, i moved mine just a smudge and started leaking, so i bought a new nipple and plastic clip, then i snapped the old one clean off trying to unthread it..

On my 97 I was able to remove both intakes without removing the quick connect. Unbolt the arm from the intakes and thats it.

I am going to be takign mine off summertime to clean the valley out good and install fuel pressure guage.

Can you remove the upper and lower plenum's as one piece?

You should be able to remove as one piece. IIRC the upper plenum gasket comes in the intake set. If not, you should be able to reuse the old one. I used mine 4 or 5 times before I replaced it.

Sorry to kinda steal this but where do you put the fuel pressure guage in the line? What kind o pressure should be expected? I might put a new one on my new engine...

Here are some pics when i took my intake off to redo the pigtail on the back of the ip....
