Removing Front Propeller Shaft from 2001 Suburban 2500

Anyone know the "trick" to removing the front propeller shaft from a 2001 Suburban 2500 ? I've broken the front universal and popped the boot at the transfer case, but I don't have enough clearance in any direction to slide the rear, splined shaft completely out of the transfer case output shaft. The crossover exhaust pipe blocks dropping the shaft down. The only possibility (other than removing the exhaust system) is removing the oil filter (maybe ?) for enough clearance to slide the propeller shaft forward on that side of the front differential. Maybe I'm just being an idiot and overlooking the obvious but any suggestions / thoughts will be much appreciated !
