I thought this might lift the spirits of our V-8 powered brethren here and BTW, don't EVER let anyone tell you that a V-8 could never "pull better" than an I-6:

This pull beat 2nd place by over 3 feet! And that 2nd place tractor looked like a Riverside-powered John Deere!!!

The tractor is a European rig there was a video floating around out there of a couple of his pulls and a shot of the double IP set up. That guy runs way high in rpm also, wonder what his lower end looks like.
 
I-6 will ALWAYS out pull a V-8 no matter what! :D Hahaha just kidding with you guys!

I've wondered for as long as I started learning about diesels, why do the engines at the tractor pulls create so much black smoke?

I could only imagine the bottom end, nothing is impossible.
 
overfueling for available air, much more impressive to me is making the power without smoke, much more impressive to an audience is lots of black smoke adds in the wow factor that draws a crowd and sells tickets to an event

Think about it whole reason for EFI be it in gasser, or Diesel is to have metered fuel vs raw dumped fuel in appropriate proportion to the need

Well TD, with regard to the diesel implementation of EFI controls there is more to it than that (and I know that you know that).

With regard to the black smoke, there is actually benefit to "overfueling". The overfueling can help carry heat from the combustion chamber into the exhaust stream and therefore help turn that turbo just a bit harder. This extra energy availability to the turbine is transformed to a wee bit more boost, which helps burn that infinitesimally small bit more fuel adding to overall power output.

So although it does put on a show, it does serve a useful purpose to those seeking maximum power.

Not surprising though, considering how big Massey Ferguson is in the rest of the world.

Makes me wonder if Carlton Cope (owner of Warpath MF 2805) imported some of the technology that makes his tractor run so well...?

I cannot believe that dumping "cold" liquid on those manifolds didn't cause something to crack...

That is a great tractor.

Furthermore, I can't believe the owner / driver didn't jump down and lay the smack down on that idiot (I would have).

The fire was "controlled" and isolated and if you notice the driver was trying to cool the headers by burping the throttle, thus shooting vast quantities of unburnt fuel through the headers (and cooled them quickly by doing so)...
