so my motor seems to be getting kind of tired shes got 251000 miles on her and it uses alot of oil so im thinking a rubuild is inorder i need to know what i should do when i start the rebuild. I know thats kind of a vague ? but im just looking for all the info i can before i start into a big project like this

First start with a list of what you want out of the engine. Do you want it to last like it did the first time or are you after high proformance? One cancels out the other. Most people would want something in between. Once you figure that out it gets easier. Either way you will probably want to rebuild or repalce the transmission to hold up to either the new found or returned power. Also fill out your signature so we know what kind of truck your starting with.

oil use can be atributed to faulty CDR , leaking exh valve stem seals or leaking turbo seals, if it runs still good otherwise, i would check in to that first before chucking out big $. But thats my opinion only.

im looking for the best of both worlds in my truck i want the power but i dont really want to have to be rebuilding all the time.

as for the turbo eating oil it is but i replaced the cdr valve about a year ago and the problem has only gotten worse it used to only go through about a quart and a half btwn oil changes and it has been useing at lest twice that much lately i changed oil yester day and only took out about 3qts i had just put 3 in it about a month ago and it was full then.

the other thing that wories me is that it shakes pretty good and it dosent smell quite right like its not burrning all the fuel.

the whole pass side of the motor is covered in oil and it seems to be going through a little coolant so im thinking it needs head gaskets and if im going to do that then i may a well just pull the motor and go through it all

my buddy just did his 6.5 and it cost around 2400 with new heads and he had the cylinders boared and sleved

sorry about the long post

My thought is always try to find if there is any leak first before tearing into anything. There are some weaknesses in that department. To see if there is any coolant in oil, you may want to do a used oil analysis and any potential wear in the oil.

However, if you are convinced that you have head gasket issue and want to tear it apart and have the resources to do it. Go do it!!!

well i decided im going to try and keep her runnin till next winter when i will have time to do the rebuild. (would hate to miss weekends on the lake due to workin on my truck) and that gives me plenty of time to gather parts and do my research
i would like to lower the compression some 18:1 would be sweet but i dont want to destroy stuff either i would like to be able to run more boost and all together make more power so any and all sugestions would be very much appriciated

Oil is cheap. You are not the only one limping a worn out diesel down the road. I have a 1991 Jetta with 615,000kms on it that uses a quart of oil every 500 miles. It is getting to the point that I can see black clouds one day, blue clouds the next...

Not always a need to lower CR, scope out for us your end game plans after the rebuild are you wanting to make it tow or go, with GM turbo other turbo if just using a GM turbo you won't need to lower CR.
