rebuild kit might have made a bad buy

the mechinest i am using could get me a pretty good deal on a rebuild kit he said they where good parts and he uses them on all the hotrod engines he builds.

For $775 he got me rod bearings, main bearings, cam bearings, all the gaskets, .030 pistons and rings, oil pump, timing set, and new frost plugs.

its made by engine tech. i found some of there kits on ebay

the head gaskets look like crap plus i need .010 over ones cause he ended up decking the block .004.

the oil pan gasket is cork:eek: and the rest seem to be ok

the bearings look ok to me but who knows

what im asking is should i get a different kit or do you guys think these parts will hold up for the long haul? im deffinetly going to get a different set of head gaskets and a different oilpan and probly the rear main as well (the two worst leaking spots on my old motor)

Do you guys use valve cover gaskets? they leaked bad on my old motor as well. think i remember reading that a good bead of RTV works better. if i use a rtv type sealer ill get "Right Stuff" had good luck with it before

whats the concences on the timing cover area use the gaskets or go with sealant

i know a lot of questions but i feel like i may have jsut wasted $775:mad2:
 
I've used engine tech stuff several years ago with no problems. The oil pan should just have the correct sealant with no gasket. If your going to get new head gaskets 6.2 says he likes the victor reinz best.
 
I used fel pro complete engine kit for mine. I did used valve cover gaskets and oil pan gaskets but i also used gasket sealent. No leaks so far....
 
When I put my 6.2 together the first time I used rtv on the oil pan and valve covers,worked good ,but the oil pan was very hard to remove later on.
 
RTV is easier to clean up after its been on the engine for a while..... just gotta bang the pan with a rubber mallet and it comes right off....... and peel the RTV off.

is there silicor or any other silicone or rubber Valve cover gasket available for this engine?

I liked them on the minivan...... I found it easier to take the upper plenum off to change the spark plugs so i would take the Valve covers off to look for sludge and inspect the rockers ... reusable gaskets made that nice.....
 
On the valve cover sealant, I think the reason The Right Stuff material is successful at remaining leak free is probably because it really sticks the surfaces together. So the very limited amount of clamp load the valve cover bolts put on the valve cover isn't the deciding factor in keeping things sealed.

With these thin, stamped steel stock valve cover sealing rails, the pad around the bolts invariably deforms under the bolt, lessening the clamp load -> little seepage starts -> tighten bolts a bit more -> more deformation, and so on.

I used an Engine Tech branded kit on a boat engine rebuild a few years back & that engine's been fine. Tough to really know as it's highly unlikely all of the components (if any) are made my Engine Tech. Many company names like that are basically marketing dept created "brand" names. So customers might develop a level of trust associated w/ a name they'll remember.

Behind the scenes, they're likely picking/choosing components from various manufactures to put together a kit that makes buying an easier "one stop shop" decision for customers.
