Hi guys,

In part three of GM Guy asking the Gurus, (look it up, all the titles begin with Question for Gurus! :rolleyes5: )
I was wondering if the experts could explain or at least point me in the direction of the answers on how the DS4 system operates.

Reason being, I am one who enjoys learning new things, and I have no clue how a DS4 system on the 6.5Ls works, and the search feature isnt much help.

I would like to know it all, from the involvement of all components, such as the ECM, the PMD, and the IP.

Any input appreciated,

Thank you!

A gm factory service manual explains it quite well. You might want to get one with all the rigs you and your dad have. The electrical section is priceless. Trouble shooting and schematics. The 97 and newer ones are a little easier to use.

IIRC in the stickes GMCTD did a very good Q and A on it. Search threads by him. I think he is the only one who could explain it in detail that even an amatuer could understand. All that remains is his threads. I wish he would come back. Very big loss to the site.

Wth happend to him? I read the 6.5 section a lot, I miss his posts. Very very informative. One of these days I'd love to get a 98-00 K3500 CCLB 6.5 5-speed project truck.

Be patient, your insatiable hunger for knowledge concerning the mechanical working of the DS4IP will be revealed within a week

I have my suspicions why but I hope he comes back around. He is sorely missed. Might have to hunt him down on that Jeep site.
Update. I pm'd him over at another site he was on but it doesn't look like he has been there since sept 09 either. I hope he is alright.

The stickies does have a good write up on it already with a lot of good info. It is mostly correct. Just know that cam timing reported by scanner is half of crank timing, not the other way around. And the PMD does not output a fixed 5V PWM signal as described, it is indeed a variable amplitude PWM signal where voltage increases with RPMs/load. Also, the DS4 increases fuel injection pressure with RPM/load. It pops at whatever injectors are set to but will push at up to 11000psi. So line pressure is not equal to pop pressure. Try explaing it to someone that has made up their mind how stuff works and you dont get anywhere.

I talked to him last night he's in middle of a move from his house in town to house in the country, said he really hasn't had time to play on any forums, ours or any other, and he says it will probable be a while before he's able to post again as there is no phone/cable where his new place is.

Dejavu? I remember the exact excuse verbatim from a few years ago!

Someone buy him a smartphone! (So he can take it apart and rebuild it!)

Then it was when he bought the property, now he's actually moving to it, been loading up connex containers and relocating the GM museum he had at his house (every concievable GM part was in his house) to the country IIRC I think he said (2) 40' and a couple of 20' containers of stuff thus far.

Tim, What's he into now (Besides the move)....Is the Jeep thing still holding his interest....Or has he mastered that....and now has a new subject, that peaked his curiosity?

Did you tell him the children were asking about Dad?):h:D

Custom Dodge builds, combining years/bodies/suspensions to his custom tailoring. I think though with Jeeps for now, . I did tell him the family :grouphug: was asking about him, he's under some time constraints and has been putting all attentions to the move, said he hasn't even booted his computer up in months.
