Question for Gurus concerning Injectors. (marine or not)

I have always wondered, and am now trying to figure out (since there are a pair for sale local for cheap) what is the whole deal with marine injectors?

Why are they produced? are they even useful? (as i thought someone mentioned that standard injectors will outflow the pump)

If used on a stock motor, will they harm the motor at all with the supposed increased flow?

Any input and discussion welcome!

Stock engine, stock programming not worth the effort, I went to marines early on I did not see any difference until combined with a program that could request max fuel from the IP, 90% of 6.5ers would be just as well served with a fresh set of stock injectors.

Marine injectors are reported to have larger tip orifices to allow more volume of fuel to pass thru the tip, and stiffer spring pressures to allow more pressure to be built up in the injector so that when it opens it has better atomized fuel spray/better ignition of said fuel.

There is one school of thought that marine injectors holding back their opening point to a higher pop pressure causes extra stresses on the IP, so that is another thing to be considered.

Benefits in a IDI engine are questionable I installed mine on recommendation of the seller/stuff I read on various forums that it was a must do modification, eh...??? I'm not sure stock injectors would not have done same for me.

I'm due a set one fresh ones myself now I'm on fence if I'll go back to marine or not, as I have all bells and whistles that should benefit me of the performance the are supposed to give, I have a pop tester maybe it's time to test and see the difference between the two as my burb needs fresh injectors as well.

The IP can run pressures up to 11,000 psi, so a hundred or two more at idle is not really a problem for it. Although a good thought is that it actually lowers the peak injection line pressure at any given fuel rate since it has a larger nozzle, so it would be good for your IP ;) While pushing a little more fuel out at the same time, instead or returning it to the tank.

Pintle design is the only difference the orfice is the same, you can set pop pressure were ever you want, but it might not start hot, the only injector nozzles that are no good are the 6.2 non turbo ones, there pintle don't even have a flat side, also beware of china nozzles, pretty sure mine are, and some of the pintles wanted to leak a little, genuine bosch should be fine. I wonder if the 40 horse claim with marines isn't a little optimistic, I didn't notice much if any difference . I would think higher pop pressure turbo nozzles would atomize slightly better than the marines, but wouldn't flow as much, which is probably why the marine pop pressure is higher to get back atomization that is lost from less restriction. The injector return line only returns fuel that has leaked inside the injector.

First, a lot of the so called "Marine" injectors are just cheap injectors with a higher pop pressure. Real Bosch Marine injectors are probably going to run $5-600 a set. I had my injectors rebuilt with a set of real Bosch 311 nozzles, which are real Marine injectors. I'm running a real Marine DB2 pump with .033 plungers, so they should be matched as well as can be.

I ran them for 10-15,000 miles tops and while doing some other work, sent them to a well known Diesel injection shop to be tested and the pop pressure reset. He reported they had "burned" and could not be repaired. He also said its common for Marine injectors used in road applications to do this and he recommended against their use.

I went with standard injectors. I really never noticed any gain when I installed the Marines and I can't really say I lost anything when I took them out.

so would a new set of never installed Marine injectors from SS Diesel be a good buy from a local guy at 150 bucks, even if it is to just re-sell on Walts forum? :)

You guys have convinced me to stay stock output, and i will probably go Bosch. So at the most i will buy to re-sell, or just not buy at all.

For that price I would use them. Do you know if they have bosch nozzles?

Guess it depends how much you want to spend,if you can't build them yourself you will be hard pressed to beat that price, if you don't trust Walt's workmanship, take them to somebody you know and trust and get them pop tested, and or taken apart and check nozzle brand.

I bought a set of bosch injectors and then some bosch marine nozzles, I found that though both nozzles said bosch on them one was made in india and one was made in germany both by bosch.
