i have a 1993 3500 with a 5 speed in it and the clutch is gone.i read on here somewhere but now can't find it again that someone said they put a solid flywheel off of a 6.2 in place of the dual mass pile of junk that they came with.the question is,does it matter what year of 6.2 it has to be so it is compatable?and does one even fit off of a 6.2?and what clutch and pressure plate would be used, one for a 6.2 then,or one for a 6.5 that works on a solid flywheel?would the shaft from the tranny fit in the clutch from the 6.2,and so on?i have a whole setup off of a 1982 6.2 standard tranny.please help, lol

i have also heard that once it has been changed over to a solid flywheel that you have to change the balancer on the front too.is this correct?

I switched from the dual mass flywheel to the single mass flywheel on my 92. I can't help you much on the compatibility of the 6.2 items but I just went to a local parts store here and purchased the flywheel for around 100 bucks. I did have to order a new clutch because the one I had wouldn't work with the new flywheel. The parts store would have the part number for the new clutch and pressure plate. You could probably ask them if the part numbers are the same for the 6.2 that you have.

I think the balancer you are talking about is a dampner that is located in the rear of the tranny. That dampner was put on at the factory in these trucks when they came stock with the single mass flywheel. I don't think they make the dampners any more. Some folks have called around different transmission shops and located one that way. I didn't put one in mine when I switched over and haven't noticed any gear chatter at all that some are reporting. I thought if it was bothersome I would then look for one but I don't have any problems so won't be looking any more for one. I think the back end of the tranny has to be opened up to put it in. Unless you have a 2 wheel drive then I think it goes on the tail of the tranny.

This is why I'm asking so many questions about this.$100 for the flywheel,WOW.The quote I got from the GM dealer (here in Canada) was $1085 for the clutch and pressure plate,$750 for the flywheel,$850 for the balancer(front, back???) and a $35 "mounting kit".I have a clutch, plate and flywheel out of a 1982 6.2 and after I read in here somewhere that the fella put a flywheel off a 6.2 on his,I just wanna know if mine might fit.I can find cheaper stuff for the 6.5 all over e-gay,but if my flywheel might fit,I can save that expense maybe at least.

google South Bend Clutch....they have a setup to replace dual mass.....have had 1 in my 93 for over 3 years and i have not been kind to it.....still locks up tight!!!!

thanks Simon for the clutch and everyone else for the info.
FYI everybody, that clutch and flywheel from my old 82 6.2l i THINK would work too.all looks like it would bolt right in.
