Not sure if this was the correct place to share this with everyone but thought it would get the most exposure here for anyone that might be considering a out of state vehicle purchase...

Finally had everything I needed in hand to go to my local DMV get my title transferred & new plates for my Tahoe yesterday...

$294 sales tax...must have a check or money order ONLY! Charged me 7% sales tax for the county I live in & you must have a copy of the sales purchase contract to present. If I had purchased this vehicle from a private party the fee would have been different, less I not sure how much less though. No way around this, they can tell by the title if it came from a dealer.

$194 for new plates & title transfer.

Almost $500 dollar spanking for new plates, title transfer & taxes...thought it was significant enough (at least I was shocked) to post & share with you all...I hate surprise$!

Friggin Illinois organized crime strikes again  :mad2:

Back in '93, I bought an '83 Chevy truck in Arkansas (private party) for $3250 and IIRC it cost me right around $250 for the whole works to make it legal in the state.

It was close to that here in minnesota. How many times does the state need to collect sales tax on the same truck?

Due to where I use to live I purchased a few vehicles from across the state line. Of course each state is different, but all I had to do was make sure the state I bought it in didn't collect sales tax, OR have the dealer take the appropriate sales tax out for Idaho instead and they would send that money to Idaho. If they didn't collect sales tax then I had to pay it when getting the plates. No extra charges were added. I know some states you get hosed in for value of vehicle etc. Plates are all the same cost here whether it's 1 day old or 30 years old.

Private in state party vs. private out of state party I bet is different fees as well. Even bringing your own vehicle into a state when you move there can subject you to sales/other tax. Some states I won't name...

A friend of mine was going to license a homemade garden tractor trailer. They wanted $140 title & license so he's been pulling it ever since without plates.

Just paid over $400 to register a 01' jeep wrangler yesterday. Bought in-state from a private seller. Gotta love connecticut
