Was just thinking with everyone tring to sqeek out every last MPG. Would a clutch be usefull on the power steering pump? Basically have it come on only when needed like at low speeds....ect, at highway speeds turn pump off.

This would not be a good option for our 6.5s unless the brakes were figured into it. But, on most cars it seems like it would work.
Im sure its probably been done before though. Usually if I think of something new it was allready done in like 1908 with patents.

I wondered what the loss was with power steering in my 69 camaro many moons ago.
Up it a dyno it showed a difference of 3hp average after 3 tests. That pump had way over 100,000 on it. Really not worth it in my opinion. The truck pump might be more, but how much?

I think the AC compressor is about what 6-8 HP and you can feel it when it engages.

I wonder if the variable resistance (EVO?) controls helps at all with parasitic loss? Newer cars tend to have greater steering effort to feel sporty vs old school power steering of the late 60's early 70's. I wonder if its a 2 fer to reduce the ps drain.

A/C has been myth busted to be the worst, power steering is a few hp, followed by the alternator. Water pumps are brutally bad for sucking HP, ditto with oil pumps.

Electric steering is easier to package, less parts, easier to program in road feel and now, they can use it to help park the car, WTF? :mad2:
