Power steering pump rebuild?

I would imagine it's similar to a gasser pump and that I have done. It's a PITA to do because there is always a bunch of crud and rust all around the thing and getting it all nice and clean/shiny/smooth is difficult (AFTER you get it apart undamaged...). Obviously you need the proper puller for the pulley but beyond that, buying a rebuild is worth it.

Bought a new pump for 54 dollars. I was thinking about rebuilding it like you, but i didnt really know how... If i did i would do it. But when i got to looking at mine the resevior was really rusted and pitted, so it was time for a new one...

If you have The EVO one, you cannot rebuild it. I tried, 5 times, it leaked... then the new one I bought the EVO sensor is welded to the bottom tube. Meaning almost impossible to rebuild IMO. Maybe you have better luck, but taking it out, fussing, and putting it back in 5 times is enough for me to never want to do it again.

To find out if you have EVO, reach your hand as far down and towards the engine as possible, there is a little module with a wire harness plugged into it.

This reads the other end on the steering column in cab and coordinates pressure accordingly to increase power steering assist when turning the wheel.

matt does your power steering ever go out at low speeds like when your backing up or turning around at like 1-2 mph? it does for me and its like trying to turn a big tractor with no power steering and under inflated tires.

Woody sounds like you need some more fluid in yours or something. Do you get a funky whine when that happens? Its from the power steering pump.

Mine is like that right now!! But i just replaced everything in my steering system, and i mean everything. I believe i still must have air somewhere in the system. Is there any good wait to get it all out? I turned it lock to lock a ton of times to get the air out.

Can't say that it does. I think that is what the EVO is for, pull the connectors and clean them and try that out. One on the PS pump, one under the steering column inside by the firewall around the shaft.

Mines only 5 months old. I replaced it as it was whining. could try flushing it, very easy to do. Could be your EVO sensor is failing too, unfortunately requiring a new unit. NOt cheap either. Try the fluid flush / connector cleaning first.

You just hook a tube to the return line out of the hydroboost up top by the master cylinder and just keep hitting the brakes and turning the wheel as somoene keeps adding into PS resevoir until clean fluid comes out the clear tube. About 3 quarts I think.

Advice: Jack the front of the vehicle up in the air. Get the tires off the ground.
