PMD replacement, now no fuel...

a friend of mine recently replaced his PMD after some issues. It didn't come with a resistor. Now it won't start. As soon as I can, I'll fill out the check list asap, but in the mean time, will no resistor cause a nostart?

TIA

Why not take the resistor out of the old one. Heard of people using a couple of paper clips bent just right to get it out.

Details, Bill... what year is his truck, did it 'no-start' RIGHT after the part was changed (and did it start before that?) or was it something that happened later?

Yes, the resistor is important. His old PMD has one he can pull out and transfer into the new one.

I think the computer can run on the the ol'd learned resistor for 50 starts, and then if there is no resistor it relearns none and can't start.

As mentioned, install old resister in new PMD.

The truck is a '95. I'm betting it's the ground too. I thought of that last night after posting this. Before the change, it would start and run, but had stalling issues. I was me that sugested the PMD so he bought a remote mount and installed it. All this has been done over the phone and I don't talk to him often, so I've been a little out of the loop. I know he has fuel to the t valve and the lift pump works etc. That ground wire justg goes to the top of the IP, right? I'm gonna call him today and if that isn't it, I'll do the checklist with him and be able to provide more complete information.

Thanks,

Bill

What kind of remote mount?
If he bought SS, the direction said to move the ground to the heatsink then move it back to the top of IP.
If he bought the one outside, check the extension cable.

Ok, a little more info has come to life. I won't be able to see the ttruck in person until Tuesday, but hopefully we can come up with some ideas before I go out there...

The truck starts.
It runs for about 60-120 seconds and then dies. Kinda like it's running out of fuel.
It won't restart unless left alone for an hour or so.
This all started when someone put GAS in the engine.
The truck wasn't run with the gas, it was put on the trailer and brought home. The tank was drained and 5 gallons of fresh fuel was put in. It drove to the station and was filled with FUEL. Since then, it will do what has been doing what has been described.

The lift pump has been replaced.
The PMD has been replaced and is outside the engine bay.
The ground is on the IP
Connections have been checked on the new harness and look/feel ok.
Fuel filter has been changed.

The truck is a '95. It's a 3500 DRW 4X4 X-cab Auto. The engine was changed last year because the old one was tired. The present engine is a known good runner from another '95. The engine ran good from Northern Ontario to Florida and back other than experiencing what is described as *misfiring* when climbing into the Apalachians. At that time the temps got to about 210.

Any ideas before I go out there and we fill out the check list?

Thanks!

Bill

Try to put the new PMD without the extension harness to see if that fix the problem. If yes, the ext. harness is bad. No, then some other problem.

Another possibility is the OPS since it is a 95. OPS run the LP, so try to override/jump the LP direct to 12V to see if it is starting. If yes, then OPS is bad. There are some other ways to test and you can search it.

The lift pump is verified as good with the fuel drain t-valve test. The other thing is, the problem existed before the PMD replacement. I was misinformed when I first posted this. The new PMD was installed in response to the problem. I was planning on trying that anyways, just because...lol

Thanks for the sugestions though!

:)

Bill

That is why I suspect the extension cable right away.
Also the PMD itself. Some people here suspected that he sells a used one as new.

I hope your friend has not given him any ratings.

Tell him to get it from Leroy at pmdcable.com

Thank you.

EDAM used to buy his cables from me (NOT ANY MORE) he has'int bought one from me in two years. He found a supplier in China for them.
I don't like the way he plays games with the shipping prices .01 for a cable and $35 shipping. Just give a staight price.

FWIW I have never sold a single cable EVER that was bad. I actualy hand build each one.

To see if OPS is working check for voltage on pin G of OBD1 port (bottom left) after it starts. Should see 14V, that the power going to LP. OPS only powers it during operation. LP relay powers it during crank, or if you put truck in gear and can put IGN to start with truck off.

While this test does indeed tell you if the OPS - LP circuit is energized, it doesn't tell you if the LP is working, or if the OPS contacts are clean and transferring enough amperage for the LP.

If you find voltage here, but you aren't getting good fuel pressure/flow from the LP, you need to run a line straight to the LP from full power to tell if the problem is a bad LP or issues with the OPS supply amperage.

Problem: Truck starts but only runs for about 30 seconds then simply stops. Just like you turned off the key. The lift pump was not coming on, this was the first thing I checked. I ran 12v to it and it pumps well. I don't know WHY the pump wasn't working but since the truck dies even with 12v to the LP, I'm assuming that the LP isn't the problem with the stalling.____________________________

List and describe any other factors which are not addressed in this checklist. We can’t see, hear, smell, or touch your truck, so the more descriptive information you can give, the more likely it is that somebody can assist you.

The truck just shuts down. My guess is something electrical. We have another computer to try next weekend, but other than that...I'm stumped. It's not like it runs out of fuel. It idles along all happy and then just stops. no warning, no reason. :(
