ok one add i see shows it in cab by 4x4 shifter, another is under bumper, also see it bolted to intake, obviously it get to hot on IP, is there anyone who "knows" if relocating it just to another spot is enough or has to be in path of air flow, i know that I had key on one day chasing heater issues and touched it and wow it was really hot, so i know it generates heat on its own, but tell me this if it needs air flow, tell me how when a slope rig idles for days at airport how is air flow present, I see adds that sell one next to intake say they have done there test and its good enough, so in all that im wondering if my hard start is pmd, its new and relocated just so happens bolt patten on abs is same as cooler so i bolted it there with some longer bolts

Relocate the PMD outside the engine bay with a harness. Period. The farther away from heat the better. The units on top of the intake manifold are the worst choice.

You say you have it on the ABS brain as of now. Not a bad spot per say, just make sure you have it mounted to a heat absorbing plate.

I would also say mount it outside the engine bay near the bumper. Sure you can mount it near the shifter. On a very hot summer day with the windows rolled up it's gonna get hot inside the truck. so much so that kids and dogs have died due to heat. Why take a chance. At least near the bumper it has the ability to shed heat due to airflow. That airflow ain't gonna happen inside a parked truck with the windows up is it. keep in mind the radiator fan also helps to create cooling airflow so it won't be burning hot when the engine / fan shuts down. Kind of a no brainer.

under the bumper or under the radiator, between the frame rails. are the preferred locations.

I moved the manifold mounted style that was on my truck to under the bumper.

You can splice the wiring in to extend the cable. IMO the extension cables are worth the expense, when your working on engine later.

Which kit you get is not big deal as what comes in the kit for the dollars. (good quality PMD, cable, heat sink, warranty, etc) Pick the vendor of your choice. (I'm sure that Leroy (Burning Oil) would love to help you on this)

I built my cable (about $40), reused my heat sink (FSD Cooler), built a mounting bracket and bought a DTECH PMD from my local Diesel injection shop (after the original PMD took a dump).

I have some pic of my PMD relocation in my repower album: 6.2 / 6.5 Repower

Whatever you do get it out of the engine bay. Anywhere in there is to hot. I could bore you with the years of testing/test results we did/still do. Heat and exstream temps swings kills PMDs. In your part of the world you can go from very low temp to engine operating temp in 10 minutes and back to ambient in a short time several times a day!. That will kill it. Out on the bumper it say cooler in summer and a constant temp in winter.
I have kits in stock.

Me thinks for this exessive idling problem this location would be the best, cool intake airflow is always present and keeps the PMD cool whenever the engine runs.
I use a piece of styrofoam over the PMD to insulate it from engine bay heat.

Your hard start is prob not PMD related,I would look for glow or fuel issues first

I would recommend that a large piece of aluminum be used as a heatsink rather than the fender body metal. The aluminum will absorb and release the heat generated by the PMD much better.

yes bought kit, and relocated but just wondering how much air flow is really needed, cooler is cool in place where i have it mounted on two bolts holes on front of abs mount.

I had one on the intake mounted to a heat sink it lasted a little over a year. I bought mine from Leroy and mounted behind the bumper and is doing great been there since Sept. no problems and install in just about 15 minutes if you are taking your time.
Thanks Leroy.

no havent gotten timed yet, im working on limited budget, unemjoyment is barely enough so waiting till tax refund, weird how your laptop didnt bring my suburban

I was referring to the pic posted by bison, not how I would do it is all.[/QUOT]
He does have it on a heat sink, its inside fender. I argued with him when he did it that heat would be transmitted through it and onto the heat sink. He put some insulation that should take care of it.

Not much if any is needed, just has to be out of engine bay and on a heat sink. Its to easy just to get it out of there so why not do it. I recomend it highly.

FYI
The PMD is mounted on a Kennedy heatsink. i cut a hole in the fender to get the heatsink on the inside in the intake airflow, there is also a baffle bolted on the sink to force the air against the cooling ribs.
The PMD gets only handwarm, even after shutdown as long as the styrofoam cover is in place ,so underhood heat is no issue.
It stays clean a dry there and swapping the PMD would only be a 5 min job if it does happen to fail and all i would need is an allen wrench.
