PMD in Cowl?

I'm thinking through where to mount a spare PMD. I have my eye on the dtech kit from pmdcable.com. Bumper mount seems unwise in Boston -- we use our bumpers for contact. (Just this morning I saw big Ford SUV push on parked cars to make a parking space bigger.)

Has anyone looked at mounting the PMD in a cowl or scoop on the hood? JC Whitney has scoops that are open front and back. Other than the hole for the PMD cable, I'm thinking the cowl space would be separate from the engine compartment. Properly located, it should provide the PMD with a steady air stream.

I looked around for threads on this. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?t=20195 goes into cowls, scoops, and aerodynamics in detail, but not in the context of PMD mounting.

If there's already a thread on this, I apologize for opening another one. I did look around, but perhaps I'm using the wrong vocabulary....

Thanks,

If you don't think the bumper is strong enough, maybe behind the grill? I'd do that before I started hacking on the hood. In the cowl itself might noit have enough airflow at speed, with negative pressure. Mines in the bumper, on a cooler thats about 3 inches longer than the pmd. Ive got it turned around so the back of the cooler hits the wind, and the bulk of the pmd is mounted inside the bumper, its only really the cooler end thats exposed in the bumper hole. And its to the inside of the bumper, which is strongest near where it bolts to the frame; I wouldn't expect a little contact would hurt my bumper, I've got bumperettes too. I think I'd have to pile into something damn hard to hurt my pmd, and I'd be doing so much damage the pmd would be the least of my worries. Plus, lke every good 6.5 owner I carry a spare pmd.

That's exactly why I don't go to Boston, and try to stay out of Mass altogether. Ignorant people like that. My truck ain't that nice, but if I caught somebody pushing on it (or trying to), we'd find out exactly who can do some pushing. In 4lo I could push an Excursion into Boston Harbor.

Hm, in the cowl would probably be alright. It a high pressure area at speed, caused by the change in angle at the base of the windshield. That's why factory fresh air vents are located there.

My worry would be possible heat soak effects after shutdown. The main advantage of the bumper mount is that it is below the heat soak areas. The cowl plenum sits above and behind the engine, not so good....

If you don't like the bumper mount, how about trying Bill heath's kit location on the aluminum skid plate?

Or if it's not a 4x4, mount it behind the bumper but not on it.

The grill area isn't a bad idea either. I was considering something similar myself....keep it low and away from the rad/condenser/oil coolers though...

In 4lo I could push an Excursion into Boston Harbor.

Fun as that would be to watch, we're finally making some progress in cleaning up the harbor, and we're trying to keep junk out of it. :D

This PMD would be my spare. The original is still truckin (knock wood). Maybe I'll go with a bumper or grille mount, and keep the PMD in the glove box until I need it.

Thanks,

IMO, if it is only the spare, you don't have to mount it. Just put it in a heatsink ready to replace the current one if needed.
