I still cant get my truck timed, I got a tech one for weekend ,Heath had me pull timing cover and check for sheared key wasnt that tried a known good pump no change, Bill heath said maybe a prom to pump mismatch? truck came as not running basket case with no history and lots of lousy repairs. Everytime I try to time it the damn thing sets a code 34 for stepper motor because it cannot reach desired timing of 5.2 degrees if I rotate pump to allow the maxed out stepper to give the desired timing the engine wont stay running it smokes white really bad because it is retarded too far. Any one used a tech one to set timing? one time I had it in the learn mode I think but nothing seemed to happen all I know is the readout for desired went to 0 but it still barely ran. I tried unplugging crank and cam sensors and starting and it started and ran great when running of either one just not both at the same time!! When one or the other is disabled the stepper motor backs off halfway and enginr runs great. Any help from you would be apprec even if it is just you laughing at how much time I am wasting on this old heap

Have you checked the crank sensor? If that checks out I would look at the pcm for mis match like Bill suggested

I think I have eliminated the crank sensor by starting engine with pump optic sensor unplugged it runs good like that

Ok for what it is worth......
I believe based on one of your other posts we are talking about 1994 model, correct?
IIRC the 1994's had two different versions of the DS4 pump. Mine of course has the expensive one..... I think Mr. Heath may be right on the money (as usual) with a pump/prom mismatch. If that is the case, I don't know if you can solve the problem with one of his chips or if you would have to drop the serious $$ and get the proper pump.

If i recall,an other member had similair timing probs.
Happened to be his CPS was installed the wrong way ,it had come loose from the hold down bracket.
If you had that happen turn the CPS 180 degree in the bracket and try again.

A mismatched IP will still time right and run well, just no power.

I can easily tell you if you have a mismatch if you tell us the EPROM code within the PCM and what pump model you have (IP has a plate on the face towards the intake with model #. Pull out the PCM and look at the EPROM.

As far as I know, there is NO stock turbo programs that has a desired timing of 5.2 degrees at idle. Like I have said before, probably either your scanner isnt set up right, the Snap On 2500, or you have a custom or the wrong EPROM.

The CPS was also mentioned, as mentioned before you should have tried running without the CPS, and without the OS, separately and reported those results. Now youve started new thread with those results instead of continuing the other. So too many threads about same problem. People lose the history.

Sounds like the CPS may be turned as Bison suggested. Are you still running with no stepper installed? What is the measured timing when desired is 5.2?

Need some simple feedback to help. We can help

thank you bison and buddy after all of this tear down and put together let me say I am happy to have been recommended this site on the 67-72 forum. You guys just fixed what I was unable to find on my own and I get paid well to fix gas engines at my work so I dont consider myself a dummy ! The crank sensor was off 180, I had thought nothing of the retainer being loose when I had unbolted it as I removed timing cover ! WOW what a difference , the timing was easy to set after the fix, I had it done in minutes! It runs good and seems to have less blowby with timing fixed is that possible? I was at the point of going to a mech IP ,I even think I found a donor truck today if I can get it bought I still might. It is a 91 6.2 3500 with a 4l80, I am pretty sure it would work for a conversion wouldnt it? thank you thank you

Glad that fixed you up, so does that mean it was that way to begin with or had you pulled the timing cover before your original post?

Is your desired timing at idle still 5.2 degrees? Would you mind positing up your EPROM code?

I think you would have been better off without 4 different threads with pieces of the information. When pulling off the sensors to check if they worked separately the idea was to see if they were in conflict, meaning one of them was in error, your CPS as it happens this time.

So you have the latest IP, the 5521 DS4, thats good, it is the latest in a line of the original 5067 compatable IPs.

Hey buddy I was wondering when you asked about pulling cps and cam sensor did you say to do it while running? when I did that the engine would die but restart after ext cranking, was that an indicator of a problem? The prom is 4225 BMRL 0069 pump is a 831 5521 so is the used one I bought and installed! I never removed the crank sensor so this truck has been screwed up for years I guess that is why it was ebayed 6yrs ago!!!! When I removed the timing cover I noticed the end of the sensor had a exposed metal strip that was not parrelell with the cover or crank I guess that I should have questioned that. Desired timing hot idle is about 7-8 cant wait to get it back together and see what else is wrong with the truck like the trans and 4wd!! thanks again and sorry for multi-posts I thought it was the only way to get fresh eyes.

Sounds like I'm becoming famous for the rotatable CPS discovery.):h

what you want now,a Medal,
Or a chest to pin it on:D

LOL. I will take photos of the "rotatable CPS" alongside the new one when I'm installing it and post it up with a link to the "other thread" so that it can comemorated forever with a "sticky".):h
