OT: No interior lights when doors are open.

I know this is for the 6.5L, but since all of us here own a certain vintage of rig, I figure we've all seen the issue in our own time.

OK... So I've got this '94 Suburban, and everything works fairly good (once I removed the junky remote start).

However, there's only one thing thats keeping me from being happy. The interior lights won't come on when any door is opened. If I turn the override switch, they come on (dome and courtesy). I've checked all the fuses, but nothing. I popped the dome light cover off and found +12v on both the orange and white leads (pulled bulb to check) with the doors closed. Nothing though in the under-dash lights. I've gone through and checked connections, but nothing seems to be out of place.

Are there any relays that control this or is there some module I'm missing?

Thanks,

-P

The Orange wire in the dome lamps is the 12V source. The white wire is the ground.

This is a ground circuit and is hot all the time. The rear jam switches ground directly to the sheet metal body.

Corrosion is a likely cuplrit here.

The front switches are a dual wire switch on the RH side and a 3 wire switch on the LH side.

The wires on the LH switch are Black (ground) white and tan the tan one is for the ignition buzzer

The black wires on the front switches are a common ground and this is called "G202" and is located right near the ALDL connector (Tech tool plug in)

Try grounding the white wire on the rear door switch first, if this works, clean the door jam and replace the switches.

The front switches could be bad or have a bad/broken ground.

Give it a go and keep us posted.

OK... Replaced the front switches this morning. No change. I did check the rear switches last night and found no voltage present (I didn't check continuity to the frame though).

I'm going to pull the ground (what does it look like?) and clean it off.

Anything else?

Proth,

my '94 Suburbasaurus, has a separate switch below the headlight switch (it is a horizontal toggle called dome lamp or cargo lamp or something.) that turns out the interior lights irrelevant of any of the doors position. I can still turn the dial to make them come on with all doors closed.
It is awesome for camping. I would think this was standard on all 'burbs. (later suburbans have them at the rear doors, and maybe up front too.)

could someone have removed it and the jumper fell out? I will try to look in the FSM tonight for that.

I think you might be on to something. I have a vacant (open) switch location under the dash light/dome light switch and next to the tailgate release. I wonder... could there be a switch that's missing? Would that cause this whole issue if it was removed?

What would it be called? GM Part number?

W00t! That was it! Thanks, Haggar!

I took a length of wire, stripped the ends and shoved it in. And voila! It's GM part number 15607064. According to my local GM dealer, it's disco'd with no locate info available. Peh! Off to the junkyards!

Interesting. Thanks for keeping us updated. Issues like this is what makes this forum the BEST diesel forum on the internet today. This site was founded on a "For enthusiasts, by enthusiasts" mantra. Diesel drivers helping other diesel drivers with issues! Thanks guys. AND girls! ;)

If you don't have any luck at the junk yard Google that part number. I was able to get results on locating it....

Proth,

Excellent!! As I was writing that I was looking on compnine and noticed they did not have part numbers for some of the switches. Glad you found the number!

Have a great one!

Imagine that? It was a dome light overide switch (or lack of)

See post #2 :tiphat

Admittedly, you were right. After cleaning up all the crappy wiring from the PO (and the PO before that), I figured it was something heinous. It also didn;t help that I only saw pics of "dome overrides" when they showed the 95+ interior.

So... Now that that is settled.... Where can I get a good re-pop of a dash bezel? Mines got the broken ears for the headlight switch.
