Hey all , fairly new to diesels and need some advice. I have a 1993 k3500 dually 6.5 turbo diesel with 128,000 miles. I know I need to replace the injection pump , but just don't have the money right now , so I've been doing the cool water on the IP thing when it gets heat soaked and seems to be working for now. I guess my first question is should my lift pump be running to prime the system before it fires up? I have hard starting issues to begin with. second question , If I wired a toggle switch into the lift pump and let it run for 10 seconds or so before trying to start , would this clear the hot thin fuel out of the injection pump through the return line enough to fire it after being heat soaked? So far , I have replaced the cdr , ops switch , ops relay , 2 new 850cca batteries & new glow plugs. Also installed a glow plug over ride button. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard adding oil to the fuel will help with the ip issues at least temporarily. Sounds like you need a fuel pressure guage so you can monitor what's actually going on.

yeah , I've added an ounce of 2-stroke per gallon of fuel I put in to try to alleviate the problem but it doesn't seem to be helping with the hot start. 2-stroke is probly too thin and I'm almost scared to try regular motor oil because although motor oil will burn , its not meant to and will eventually damage more parts down the road. If I were to hook up a fuel pressure gauge , where would I do that on the engine? On the water drain outlet by the thermostat housing?

You can put it there.

The best place is the line from the filter manager to the IP.

I've been running nd 30 wt for about 6 mos now and it has actually improved my ip. I have diff issues though. 1 quart per tank Bill Heath reccommends this also. At least so I've heard.

Sorry I'm not up to speed yet on some of the abbreviations everyone uses on here yet. Am I to assume the "nd 30wt" Is non diesel straight 30 weight?

I can hear the lift pump running at idle and for a few seconds after I shut the truck down , but nothing when I first get in the truck and turn the key to let the glows cycle. Is this normal? I thought the lift pump was supposed to prime for a few seconds before cranking.

Not real familar with that year but I thought I read somewhere that it only ran while the engine was being cranked. Have you opened the drain valve to verify fuel while running? Just because you can hear it doesn't mean it's pumping fuel. Been there done that.

When I first bought the truck 3 months ago , I disconnected the wiring connector at the lift pump and rigged up a 12v motorcycle battery to the pump to get it running to test (because the ops sensor was bad). when I cracked the water drain t open it was pumping fuel.

Only thing left to do is put the guage on to verify whether it's up to snuff. I have a cheap mech guage with a long hose so I can read from the cab just long enough to verify things. On my long list of things to do is a in the cab guage.

yeah , I hear ya on the long list of stuff to do. One thing I was worried about with adding motor oil to the fuel was the colder temps we get here in upstate NY , but I guess if you're in alaska and doing it then that answers that question for me. For what reason are you adding it to the fuel?

your talking about the pump mounted on the frame rail behind driver door? i thought the injector pump was up on the front of the engine.

I'm talking about both. The truck is hard to start to begin with which makes me think that although its operational , my lift pump is weak. My IP problem is when I try to restart the truck after running it for a while. The IP gets heat soaked and won't refire unless I pour cool water on the pump or wait for it to cool on its own (thats why I asked about the oil in the fuel thing).
