92 6.5 DB2 IP.
no start situation.
fuel to the IP,plenty of it at 11 psi.Not a drop at the injectors.
no air at the filter, clear return line full of fuel.No leaks.
power to the ESO,ESO clicks.
Glow circuit 100 % working.

Owner said,no start one morning a couple days ago, running good before, long cranck finally starts.Fires half decent during the day
Hard start next morning, easy start day after,no start next day,in my shop now.

One clue,
owner said engine had the tendency to rev up for a sec or 2 without working the go pedal once in a while since the day he had it.(About a year)

?? can ESO click and not work on these DB2's.???I never had one apart so i don't know

DB2's rev up with a lack of fuel - generally I am about to walk when the engine revs.

I have had the metering valve stick closed on me and cause the engine to stall when slowing down. It is possible to have the valve stuck closed - the valve will close for compression braking and completely cut off fuel.

I would pop the top cover off and verify the valve will move w/o binding and rotate the engine by hand to check that the shaft isn't broken.

Fuel filter ok with screen in place? Waxed cold fuel? Just sounds like the IP has a lack of fuel issue.

EDIT:
Make sure the shut off clicks after you put the cover on otherwise it is locked in WOT and will run away.

That's my thought too.
The fuel is still winterdiesel but even if it was waxed, after 24 hrs in a heated shop it should not be an issue now.
I go look for sticky valve or broke gov-nor spring under the cover.

Yeah,i got it figured out already,it was like WarWagon suggested(thanks man). The metering valve was stuck closed.Must've had a drop of water in it to cause that.
I flipped it back and forth for a while and it moves freely again, don't know for how long though.I'll tell the owner to run some 2 stroke in the fuel.

These IP's are very similair to the older CAV pumps in their make up i noticed.

Have a shop rebuild the pump as the metering valve is a common wear item. Should be able to get that part from a shop as well if you rebuild it yourself. All it is going to do is cause issues for the customer as it keeps sticking. But customer and their budget may be ok with this? That stickiness is why I am running the 6.2 pump on my pickup not the 4911 6.5 pump - I hated the stalling.

Don't know if the owner wants to put much more money in it than he allready has.
its been one thing after an other all winter long.
he is losing coolant as well, rad hose gets hard.

It's Prob gonna be a candidate for Barry's truck orphanage pretty soon :hihi:

Only diesel used in this one.No visable corrosion noticed in the pump.
The fuel system looked pretty clean from what i could see,he had the tank and lines replaced a couple months ago.

GM cooling tabs can prolong a HG job for sometime depending on how it's blown. I put some in my old 83 and it lasted 3 yrs and was still holding when I sold the truck.

You already found the problem but this is a similar symptom to our old David Brown tractor with the CAV IP.

When it was built a piece of solder was droped into the fuel tank and every so often it would suck air when the solder would cover the fuel outlet,it would surge for a while and eventually quit from lack of fuel.
Bleeding it would get it restarted and all would be good untill the blockage happened again.
Never did get the piece out because the tank fill opening was inserted into the tank enough to make a ledge that would prevent the gob from being removed.

The Allis loader i have would only idle when i bought it(i got it cheap because of it)rev it up and it would stall.turned out to be a bee stuck in a T in the return line at the pump(roosamaster)
It's still beyond me how it could get in there??
