I am going to get a 6.5l oil pump drive to replace the vacuum pump that goes on 6.2l (I will be using the 6.5l serp belt vac pump). The oil pump drives are available with or without RPM sensors.

My question is can I run a tachometer gauge using the oil pump drive with a RPM sensor or is just used for auto tranny computer stuff?

The 6.5L gets its RPM signal from the alternator. At least, that's hows the stock system operates. If you want to operate an after market tach I would imagine it depends on the tach as not every tach is the same.

I have heard this before and I understand it. While looking for an oil pump drive, i found that 6.5's with auto trannies have an RPM sensor on the oil pump drive. Is this just for the computer to regulate shifts and what not and can one run a tach off of it?

That I'm not sure about. I've never actually heard about running a Tach off that sensor. Again i think this would be a manufacturer specific question since tachometers use an electrical signal in "pulses" top display RPM speed. I would imagine that if the sensor was producing the same electrical signal theoretically It would work. even if the signal was not the same as the tach you want, they make converter boxes that can make the signal to one understandable by the Tach...

what kind of tach? an aftermarket gasser tach?? a factory in dash diesel tach?? it makes a difference. but in one word no in most all cases the wrong number of pulses.

Only DB2 equipped 6.5 NA's have the speed sensor. It is for the auto trans computer (TCM). DS4 trucks with a PCM do not have a speed sensor on the oil pump, instead they use a crank sensor. A few years ago at the D page Dr. Lee did an article on using the oil pump sensor to run a tachometer. I don't remember quite how he did it, seems like there was a simple circuit involved using some common Radio Shack type components.

I would check to see if that guage will work with the alt signal. I've read that stock gasser tachs are diff than our stock diesel tachs. Just wouldn't want to assume anything

Dakota didgital makes an adapter to connect your alternator to a gas tach ive done that on two of mine.

The tach i linked to is a diesel tach. It will be a good while till i get to gauges. She does not even move under her own power yet. I am just getting an oil pump drive now and I am making sure I do not have to buy it twice due to tach needs.
