I was planning on using synthetic 5w-40 next oil change and was thinking added filtering would be good but maybe on the cheap, so has anyone used one of those oil filter spacer/adaptor to bring out another oil line and just add another stock type oil filter?

I just want about double the oil life, like 6k miles, which is about 6 months for me.

Also, anyone run any of those rail coolers (long and skinny) for the oil or trans fluid?

With the an extra oil cooler has anyone seen significant drops in oil pressure?

Thanks,
Tom

Yes, my brother has a Jegs transmission cooler in his 350 Ranger, it is the heat sink rail type, end caps leaked when we first put it on, tightened them up and not a drop after that, seemed to work good but no hard numbers as the truck doesn't have a transmission temperature gauge.

You looking for engine temp or trans temp, with deep pan and trans cooler I never go over 200F pan temp in trans, I've got to assume that is close to operating temp as fan on trans switches on with 180F return temp out of radiator trans side I'm plumbed to.

I've got to assume less trans heat helps with oil temp as well, also my bypass setup has main and bypass filters away from the engine so has to be some passive cooling there as cooler air pulling some heat, plus about 3 extra qts of oil in engine lube oil system with lines and filters, more oil to get heated up.

Never got around to hooking up my engine oil temp gauge it's on the "to do" list.

Yeah, I'm mainly looking to cool the oil, which goes a long way in cooling the engine, but I also want to add a low cost filter. I dont drive a whole lot and I feel strange not changing the oil every 6 months or so, so I only need the oil to last like 6-8k miles, and I thought putting another OEM filter type would do the trick.

How do you add a bypass oil filter? Where do you tap in, I was thinking of one of those adaptors that screws in

I guess I need to know the oil filter threading and specific outer diameter needed if I do that.

Hey Rodd how do you like your stepvan with that 4bt? I have one also great mileage but pretty wimpy. On a road trip I've gotten 17mpg not bad for a 26' long suare box.

I get about 18-20 mpg's. Top speed is 62 on the flats. 45 mph going over donner pass. If a trucker holds at 65 I can do 65 staying about 50 yards behind drafting. It loves WVO. In the summer I run about 90% wvo to diesel. In the winter I run 50-50. No probs at all except for an oil leak and a power steering leak.

Sorry to hijack the thread. If you have any other questions better pm me. I don't think the mods like us changing the subject.

What size oil filter are you running now? Since your two wheel drive you can run a two quart filter no problem if your just wanting higher volume capacity and filtering area, this would be the cheapest/simplest way. Thats what I use on my 93 2wd.

For the best filtering you would have to use a bypass filter setup, but for 6k mile oil changes, its not really cost effective or needed IMHO.

Just get a WIX(they catch most particles down to 10-12 microns) filter and a good diesel oil, you'll be fine. Also on a side note, "the best oil filter is a good air filter", and a working CDR with a sealed engine is important also.

I'm not sure, I'll have to check, that number sounds familiar. I just ask my parts guy for a two quart filter for my 6.5 truck, IIRC it is used on chevy 2ton trucks also.

Your truck should have the bypass built into filter adaptor bolted to the block, IIRC it was in the late 90's when GM quit furnishing us with a bypass valve, now we have to trust one built into a cheap throw away filter on the later trucks.

You can run the newer filter on the older trucks, but I dont recomend it, you dont need two places to bypass unfiltered oil in your engine.

Will that sandwich adaptor work on a 6.5? I cant remember how my 2wd 6.5adaptor is, if it had the two 5/16" bolts like the gasser or just the big threaded nipple throught the center, hmmm, got me wondering. I have a couple of the factory GM gasser sandwich adaptors, I'll have to check them out next time I change oil.

Here's a pic of that two quart filter on my truck, with a sandwich adaptor you'll be at the bottom of the pan, but should be ok.

Hey midnight: Is that a oil temp bulb in your oil pan?

Yea, thats my oil temp sender. I took a 1/8" pipe connector, cut it in half, welded to the oil pan, then drilled a hole through the pan letting the oil push the shavings out as I drilled. Worked good.
