Odometer stopped logging miles, trying to find true mileage.

First of all it blows my mind that i am hearing rumors that GM only stores mileage in the cluster itself! I cant imagine why the PCM/BCM wouldnt log miles and why GM would set it up this way. I know from working on Big trucks that all of the heavy MFR. store actual mileage in the ECM. Anyway i am trying to sell my 04' ccsb lly zf6 and before i can i need to replace the cluster as the oil pressure gauge stopped working and the odo does not log miles, i am not sure how long it has not been logging miles and i need to get actual mileage so the new cluster can be programmed. I dont want to be tagged with odometer fraud if i sell it without displaying the correct mileage. Needless to say i talked to a friend who is a GM tech and he told me that a dealer should be able to get actual mileage. However both dealers in my area (freeport il) are telling me that the cluster is the only place that mileage is stored. maybe someone here has been through something similar..any help would be appreciated. thanks.

The cluster is the only module that stores the miles in these trucks, it's just how it is. You can go to the DMV and have them tag your odometer as milage unknown, and be legal. Otherwise there are cluster rebuilders out there that can read the mlage out of the clusters logic module, or repair your cluster for you.

Check the dmv and see what mileage was last recorded. Just find a cluster higher than that. Not exact but it will get you by.
