Guy that bought my 95 Tahoe emailed and said he lost the tach annd it's not charging. I told him to check the wires on the alt and batt cable then if not most likely a dead alt no ?

Since the 6.5s get their RPM signal from the alternator I would venture to say a bad alternator, or something to do with the alternator.

It happened to me, alt went wacky and alternator is bad. At the end, the blinker blinks erratically and truck won't start. The funny thing was, I can run it for more than 2 months without alternator.

Well my alternator went out while plowing, and I sure as hell didn't get 2 months. In fact, I dropped the plow and BARELY made it to the house to fix it. Truck started going slower and slower and slower, must have effected the PMD signals giving the IP little to no fuel. I probably killed alot of the batteries with the plow when I dropped it, and my batts were 3 or 4 years old at the time...

I drove a 89 6.9 home however with no lights, no dash lights, no electrical power whatsover with a dead alt... That setup didn't need a drop of juice to keep running.

Matt,

Since your truck is a 97 you should add the second alt on your truck.

That way in the future when you lose an alt you will have a back-up.

I have the part # list if you need it.

I am sure this dead alt cost you some money. :mad2:

X whatever on the alternator, years ago when I had my 96 6.5 when mine went out it did the same thing. drove for a month like that until I rebuilt it
