My hillybilly deluxe wont start. Sometimes it will start and run for maybe 5 seconds then wont start again. I finished up my push buttton for the glow plugs. I though the glow plug controler was the problem. I checked and the lift pump is working. The only thing to check that I can think of is the glow plugs. I never checked them before, I looked through the library and didnt see anything on how to check the glow plugs.

If it starts and runs for 5 seconds I wouldnt thing it would be the glow plugs, sounds more like a fuel problem to me?

It doesnt start and run for 5 seconds all the time. Most of the time it wont start at all when I try it. I have a battery charger on it now. Im going to go back out and try it. Would fuelgelling cause it? Everything else thats a diesel runs fine. Its about 18F out.

The gas station it came from only has #1 on the pump.

I did get it to start, ran fine. It just took alot of cranking to get it to start. I dont think it has a block heater. I wanted to plug it in and see if that would make it start.

My Cat backhoe has an air problem but only when it's cold. I talked to the Cat mechs about it they said they have seen it before and I need to tighten the fittings on the fuel lines. My point is cold weather can cause things to act diff then they would warm.

I know this truck has leaky return lines. Other then that everything was fine back when it was warm.

Water in Fuel, try to drain from the t-valve. How is fuel filter?

Ill try and drain the filter tomorrow. Ill see how it starts since I ran it today. I cant say about teh fuel filter. I dont know if the last guy changed it or not.

The truck started up good yesterday. I turned the key and the glow plugs went out after about 8 seconds so I turned them on with the button on the dash. It fired right up and ran good. Today I turned the key and the glow plugs ran for about 8 seconds and I started it. It fired up but the glow plugs never came on again and it started to miss so I pushed teh glow plug button and it took off on all cylinders.

I wonder if it has a slow leak letting air in.

What plug number are you hitting with the override? If they are the factory plugs you are risking the engine from breaking the 9G's via overheating. You may have some burned out.

Just pull the wire off the plug and check plug for 1 ohm resistance to ground. Also check for 11V or so at the plug connector with all plugged in when the glow plug light comes on.

Corrosion on the glow plug controller for the big current terminals is common.

The glow plugs were supposed to have been changed when he put new head gaskets on back in the spring. Ill try and check the glow plugs tomorrow like you said.

I checked for the 1 ohm on the glow plugs. On the left side starting from the front it has 0.5, 0.6, 1.0, 0.6. The right side under the alternator is 0.6, I couldnt get to the other 3.

I didnt start the truck yesterday but today when I started it it fired right up and ran for about 15 seconds then shut off. It took alot of cranking but it finaly started up.
