So I was getting the tires rotated on my '09 2500HD patrol rig yesterday. One of the guys comes up to me with a smile and says he found out how to change the settings for the rear tire pressure. Wanted to know if I wanted the settings changed on mine. Oh hell ya. Running 60psi now and no stupid light in the dash!!!! The center rib has just about worn down to the bars on the tires that were on the back from constantly being at 80. Of course they are the factory tires so the sooner they wear out the better. Can't wait to go up into the mountains and not bounce my teeth out over every pebble in the road.

So it can be done. GM says it can't, but they are lying. Just have to find the right tire store that knows how.

Plugged a big 'ol computer thing to the truck (I think he called it a Genesis). Pushed a few buttons, then asked what pressure I wanted.

That's all I know.

I wish I knew more about it also...

On my wifes Grand Prix GTP (back in the day) when you had a flat and repaired or just aired up to a higher pressure you just pushed a reset button under the dash that set the current pressure...and when your tires would experience a 15#(?) decrease in pressure the light would come on...

maybe there is some sort of reset with the accelerator pedal or key switch cycling to set the new pressure so the light will work as designed with the new chosen pressure?

Ya, our Impala we just put the tires at whatever pressure you want and then reset the monitor through the radio controls. Not that I really change it on the car, but that simple system seems to work just fine.

I've said it before. My '05 is going to have to last me the rest of my life. I've disable all the chimes etc. and there's no stupid tire sensors.

No. Ever since tire pressure monitors became mandatory by Federal Law, there is no way for the customer to change the tire pressure settings. --Government Regulations - Big Brother protecting us from ourselves. :(

Most dealers will not change the settings for the same reason, but it CAN be changed if you have the know how and the right equipment.

i work at a chevy dealership and we change the all the time for the big vans and gas trucks 80psi is just too much some times it makes for a rough ride

wish your dealership was around here. The 3 dealerships that I went to told me there was no way the pressure monitors be adjusted, either deal with the light in the dash or run the tires at 80. Since I hate lights in the dash I went with the latter.

On the GTP, Impala, and other cars like that, the tire pressure monitoring is through the wheel speed sensors. There are no sensors in/on the wheels themselves, it just measures the speed and compares all 4, and if one changes it sets the light. That's why it just says "Normal" or "Low", it doesn't say the pressures like the newer vehicles do.
