Had posted last week or so about my AC squealing my belt and had installed new Dayco belt, well it started acting up again today on my way home from work, checked the belt tensioner & sure enough it was at full stride, the new dayco belt had stretched out more in 400 miles then the old one that was on there.

Installed the new heavy duty gates green belt (Thanks BK95td) tonight & the tensioner is back were it should be...friggin junk replacement parts! Hope that this is the ticket, new belt was $58 with tax

I've had good luck with the standard napa/gates belts. I figured the heavy duty should be even better.

iv'e always been partial to the gm belts.
on my last truck bought new I got 7 years out of the original belt,18 months out of a gates belt and another 7+ years out of the next gm OE replacement belt, truck went to the wreckers after that.
the truck still ran great but had body cancer develop.

I'm running the GATES green stripe from CARQUEST now as they come with a lifetime warranty on them never to make noise. When it does make noise, take it back and get another one free of charge.

Well since March I've been thru Duralast, Goodyear, Dayco, and after 3 days my Gates green is stretched out according to the wear marks on my tensioner now.

I talked to Bill Heath he surmises the tensioner has gone away, description as they age they get worn to point with friction under load they can't relax with the spring tension overcoming the metal to metal wear in the tensioning arm and are ever tightening,

My Gates green just since last night is tight as a drum's head right now, tomorrow I'll get a new tensioner and another new belt I guess

Junk cheap replacement parts!

My tensioner looks new, but that don't mean a dam thing...:mad2:

I will watch this belt closely, the only reason I purchased the first belt was due to AC compressor squeal when turning on the AC. That issue is gonna be addressed tomorrow...new AC compressor getting installed. New not a re-manufactured one.

My fear of replacement parts being junk was confirmed again today. My local wrench that will change out my AC compressor told me he has been experiencing all sorts of failures with replacement parts. I asked if there was a specific brand that was worst then others, he replied NO there all turning into a crap shoot Carquest, Napa, Delco he has had a rash of recent failures with all brands...very disappointing :(

My tensioner looks new, replaced 100K ago with genuine GM, no squeal seems to function okay, except I'm stretching out the belts, they look good no tears cracks frays but are stretched too long after a few days or hours of operation depending on the belt brand;
they all can't be bad, can they ???

And with outsourcing how do I know the tensioner I'm getting isn't marginal.

I was showing my new green serp belt off last night to another 6.5 guy I met for the 1st time after years of webbing it Nobby Peers, who happened to be working on a 1938 EMD 2 stroke 5 cyl 300 rpm full speed reversing engine tugboat on the Erie canal in Waterford, talk about a nostalgia Diesel.

Anyway we had just been on a ride in my truck & I was checking out the mods under his hood, and lo/behold his belt was off scale on tension marks, I showed him the new green belt that should fix his problem next time he went to replace his, imagine my surprise that last night it was mid range, and this afternoon it was completely off scale in loose direction but under serious tension which lends credence to Bill's recommendations.

Dayco belts suck. Period. Doesn't matter what they are for. I got 3K miles out of the dayco belts on my blazer before the tensioners were at max. Switched to all gates belts on the blazer, no issues so far and the belts sit nice and high in the pulleys, so i know they are getting a nice grip.

My pickup has been running a Goodyear gatorback for the past year and a half. Next belt will be a Gates.

Buddy of mine has been running a Gates belt for over 200,000 miles and several years now. It's cracked pretty bad, but makes no noise at all.

Welcome to my world. I run a small(VERY small) repair business out of my shop at home, and warranty work hass been KILLING ME! I've found CARQUEST's parts to be some of the better ones, but much of there stuff now is the same as everybody else's(I just get a discount at CARQUEST which helps out). No matter which store you go to now, most everything is made by the same people. I buy GATES belts and hoses from CARQUEST and new water pumps and balancers from them. For starters and alternators I buy from ADVANCE and only buy the new REMY units. As for bearings I go to the local machine shop and buy ACL's whenever possible. But in the end 95% of these parts are just PURE SHIT! It has gotten to the point that I now tell people up front that I raised my labor rate 50% just to help offset my warranty losses for parts that have failed in under a week. After that it is on there dime to replace it for the most part. I will stand behind my workmanship till the vehicle rusts away, but parts is another story. So I feel your pain, but just remember that there are small shops like me who feel it even worse.

He He He, it was a Fairbanks Morse but I'll forgive you for that.:D

Never really discussed this before meeting Tim (which I really enjoyed by the way, Top Guy) but yep my belt prior was at the worn mark for a while, I have a habit of changing based on cracks/slippage/squealing rather than the indicator. After changing yep sure enough did not take long to get back to the wear mark but it is behaving fine otherwise no squeal overheat and definitely no loss of charge issues as I accidently drained my batts the other day and they bounced right back. Out of interest I am going to try the gates greenback.

Cheers
Nobby

More friggin BS!

Had the new AC compressor installed today and guess what...yep the SOB was squealing like a stuffed pig when the mechanic 1st started the truck :mad2::mad2:

We ended up installing a new gates belt 1" shorter and seems to have settled it down...WTF...:???:

The tensioner may just be next to get changed, thanks for sharing the info.

Yea this replacement parts issue is really starting to piss me off :skep: the new AC compressor is a new Dephi not that it means anything...keeping my fingers crossed that the shorter belt is gonna remain quiet, at least until I get home from my fishing trip, leaving on Saturday, wish me luck!

We partially blew it guys

Crankme 69 stopped by yesterday. I looked at his engine a while and he happen to say he thought it had a wrong pulley somewhere.:???: I grabbed a tape measure and shure enough, The alternater pulley was wrong:eek::rolleyes5: It was the 2 3/8" gasser pulley instead of the 2 5/8" diesel one:nonod: OOPPS.

Nice to meet you Barry!

Barry,

It was great meeting you and I really enjoyed the meal

This weather up here is a wonderful change compared to the heat & humidity I left at home.

I hope we get the chance to meet up again someday... really love it up here :)

I should have found that pulley on my own, I new something was wrong & should have dawned on me it was the alt pulley, oh well thanks for the help.

So, is the smaller dia pulley caused the squealing? because the belt is too long?

That is what we concluded...after installing a 1" shorter belt the squeal is gone.

My clutch was shot on my AC compressor anyway & at almost 211K on the clock, not like it was a waste changing that out. I just hope the new dephi AC compressor will last 1/2 as long as what the OEM one did...:skep:
