I read this over at Download.com and wanted to pass it along to you folks:

Last week, BleepingComputer.com reported on how to remove a new variant of an old scareware. This new nasty, known most commonly as Antivirus2010 or Anti-Virus-1, points you to spoofed versions of Download.com, ZDNet, PCMag.com, and other software sites, demanding that you download their program to clean your computer. Of course, it does nothing of the sort, merely perpetuating the infection.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has proven to be one of the few malware killers that can effectively remove Antivirus XP 2008 and its variants, and it should work against the latest ones, too.

I highly recommend you read this and get Malwarebytes.

Read the blog here: http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-10170252-12.html?tag=nl.e415

You're welcome bud...you don't have to purchase this program to use it, you just won't have auto protection - you have to run the updates and scans manually (once a week should do). I just ran it on my old rig here and it found 9...and that's with the other stuff I run.

Hokay, I did the head-to head-to head test tonight...

SuperAntiSpyware, Malware Bytes, and Spybot SD

Updated the three candidates.

Then went and surfed some nasty porno and game sites. Yech.

TEST PROTOCOL:
Scanned with one, aborted - scanned with another, aborted - scanned and cleaned with third.

Results:

Spybot SD - 1 bug
SuperAntiSpyware - same bug, 2 others
Malware bytes - same bug, 1 same as SuperAntiSpyware, 1 different.

So, in total: I apparently had 4 different bugs on my PC and NONE of the 3 programs tested got them all. Had to re-run SuperAntispyware to get the one Malware bytes didn't pick up, after using MB to get the one that Super didn't pick up.

I have no reason to believe that any of these scanners is foolproof, and continue to suggest multiple layers of defense.

And now you know... the REST of the story.

Have a nice nite, y'all!

Such dedication...searching porn sites on our behalf...:fing02:

Funny how you mentioned those three...they happen to be the same ones I use on my Vista install. SuperAntiSpyware doesn't work on windows 7 and they are not motivated at all to bring it up to speed yet. They must not like Beta's.

The things is, and I suspect the same for many users (most), I just get caught up doing things when I sit down in front of the puter. Updating and scanning for the latest bad guys isn't always on the top of the to do list.

Oh...Download.com did say that the spoofed site shows the graphics from last year... :ciappa: ;)

Ya know, I'm pretty sure the gaming sites had more crap on them than the few porn sites I could find... certainly, they had more pop-ups - my blocker was reporting that they were trying like crazy to open up new windows.

I went to a couple warez sites too, so it might also have been them.

So I had "antivirus 2009" on my desktop. A local guru suggested that I run these programs in this order, all free as well...

Spybot

Malwarebytes

Bitdefender

Just thought I'd pass the info along. Unfortunately, it was to late for me and at this point I can't even log into windows in safe mode....

So keep up with your protection software...I know I will be from now on...Hard lesson learned...

Spybot and Bitdefender won't touch this one once you have it...

The two i mentioned above are the only way to clean up unless you like registry editing and HiJack This.

I have always had really good luck with A-Squared and now A-Squared free from emsisoft for removal when all others claim the machine is clean.

I have tried many different a-v and firewall combos over time to see what works and ease of use, I'm currently using avira premium suite. after install I went trolling for trojans ect, avira would pop-up a warning mess box, I would click deny and move on. after many were blocked I performed several scans and the computer is clean. thing is try to block entry in the first place, instead of trying to get rid of it after, and yes game sites seem to be as bad as porn sites for trojan and other malware. regards

After reading ALL of the above post's just re-affirms why I use a MAC as ALL the viruses mentioned will NOT affect my computer!

Ok I dont know anything about computers other then how to derail threads on forums ):h What is a Mack? Is a dell one of those? Or is it a name of computer?

It's just a different operating system. The viruses don't effect them because the hacks target windows based systems, because they are much more popular. If mac's system gained in popularity, a lot more viruses would be written for it.

My wife got me to buy a Mac after our Windows based P.C. crashed! I am using a Mac with a HP printer both from 1996 for my Lawncare Business with no problems ever! It went to the "shop" once AFTER a lightening strike to make sure it was O K !

Love to help my OS-challenged brothers (Mac owners:)), what version of IE was she using, what infection did she have, and what file did Malwarebytes remove?
