This week end, a guy changes his IP.

The truck started fine, run smooth.
His wife took the truck and went down to Noumea, 400 kms south, and then she experienced stalls.

They called me and asked if I can have a look.

I went to see and found the PMD is shot. They kept the old one and saved the new as a spare.

I put on a spare one I get so she can drive back home and send mine back after they swap their new one.

Then, I hooked the computer and found a bunch of codes (EGR, power steering, IP codes, etc...), probably in history as she said the MIL is on till several time now.

So, I cleared all codes, checked again : no more except one about power steering.
I clear again and thought that should be a good idea to do TDDC learn & time set.

Holly crap! As I was doing TDC learn, the truck started to stumble, run really rough and started to smoke white (unburnt fuel)

I checked TDCOffset and found it at +2.42

IMO, she is out of range in timing. After we retime the pump, it should go back to normal, what do you guys think ?
Check gauges light also lite on, what should that mean ?

I bought my GMTDScantech because I had the TDCOffset code 87? When I initiated TDC learn it ran really rough until it found a value. I think what you have is normal and will be good after pump is timed.
The check gauges light means you have a gauge showing a reading you don't want, ie: low oil pressure, etc.

Yes, thanks NVW.

I think it will be OK after timing is properly set. I'm a bit anxious as this happened while I was performing the TDC relearn, but I do believe it is normal as the PCM was probably running with old values stored...

You're right, oil pressure gauge is not working. I phoned the owner and he said he may have damaged the OPS. Luckely for him, IP is still getting power...

Yeah it's scary, I did mine just before bed. I was leaving for Edmonton a 5 the next morning. I thought I really screwed up while it was learning. Panic attack anyone):h.

Fortunately, no. Just timing issue.

We set the TDCOffset at -0.88, as we didn't get time enough to find the -1.50

Now the truck is running really smooth and smoke free, but...

waterpump is shot and is leaking strong... It was dripping a very little yesterday, and suddenly is going worse and worse today. I bet the seal has failed.

I have the feeling that the lady won't drive her truck for a 400 kms trip to home, not tomorrow...

What year truck is this? I assume you meant the LP was still getting power, since the OPS is not needed in 96+ trucks for LP power.

What do you mean about power steering codes? What is the number, maybe you are referncing the wrong list.

That's a 1997 truck.

IIRC, in 96+ trucks, the OPS circuit is not needed during the glow step, as the ECM actuates LP feed circuit during wait to start.
As soon as the engine has launch, it stops caring about powering the LP, and so does the OPS circuit. That's why you still get a power line (orange + gray wire in the OPS harness) through the OPS.

I don't remember exactely the code #, as I was deleting it each time to be able to initiate TDC relearn and time set, but I remember it was refering to power steering : I'm using AutoEnginuity software as a scan tool.

I'll try to hook my laptop again this evening and do a scan, If possible : the truck is being out of order at the moment as they are changing the waterpump and OPS...
