I need some insight to a vehicle i want to purchase. I have found a 95 yukon for sale. they are asking $7000 and firm. the truck has 237000 miles but has had the motor replaced by a gm goodwrench motor. the new motor has the gm goodwrench stickers on the valve covers but it has a canadian maple leaf in the logo, which leads me to believe that it was replaced while it was in canada. the truck was purchased and resided in canada for the first 100k miles. if the motor was replaced in canada then the motor would have 140k or more on it. in 2001 it has been moved to california and and then washington state. i have drove and inspected it and it checks out ok. shifts great starts great. the body is ok. not perfect but i can fix the issues.

I am looking for an obs tahoe/yukon 2 door for work. i am in construction and will not be towing anything. i would prefer diesel due to gas mileage and fuel cost but i can settle for a gasser.

Is $7k to high considering the rarity, should i walk away considering the price and reliability. i am not looking to do to much as far as mods, maybe exhaust, intake, and fix the reliability issues, water pump, ops, pmd, etc.

So the question is should i buy this yukon or get a gasser.

Thanks in advance

Keep looking unless it is in perfect condition and then it is still high IMO. You can get gas Yukons all day long and they will get around 15 MPG. McDonald's cheeseburger's sold are close to the number of GM 350's out there. You can buy a lot of gas for the extra cost and then higher maintenance cost of the diesel.

If it has a navistar or Optimizer 6.5 block in it that is different. Year engine was replaced? Look in the valley for the logo's of the non-GM cast block.

With all the mods maybe a 1995 would be worth it.

6.5 Injectors last 100K. Engines tend to want head gaskets at 200K.

Maybe you should look for a RC pickup with the 6.5 and put a camper on it?

6.5's do command a higher price than gas, but, not that much. $4-5K is about average.

IMO you should look for a 3/4 ton as the brakes are much better. Suburban or pickup.

There is a good reason for having something like a Burb or Tahoe when you're in construction. Tools put away wet---rust!! The heater is nice for drying things out. I worked out of the back of a pickup (with a canopy) installing cabinets for several years so this comes from the voice of experience.

I'm going reiterate what others have said. Having owned a 95 Diesel Suburban for 17 years and a 6.2 Sub for 4 years before that, I like the Diesels. But I don't know that I would recommend one. If you know what you are getting and it is what you want, then go for it. But they are not generally regarded as long life engines. They are fairly expensive to repair and very expensive to replace/rebuild. I know this is the 6.5 Forum, but given their age and the likely repairs and maintenance of a 6.5, a 350 is probably a better deal all around.

I'm not sure what your requirements are, but if you are planning on carrying a lot of stuff or towing a trailer with any weight I don't know that a Tahoe is what you want. I might look at a 2500 which means a Suburban or a truck.

Lastly, the price does seem high for what is being offered.
