OK, I replaced my IP today and figured I would change the glow plugs out while I have the turdblow (turbo) off. I can unthread them all the way but that is as far as I can get them. I only worked on the driver side so far before I ran out of light.
Anyway what are the tricks to getting stuck GP's out?

Some people say you can crank the engine over and the compression will blow them out. Never tried this myself. On the old 6.2 with the old non-regulating glows I was able to take vise grips and twist them back and forth while applying a pulling force and basically shave off the swollen part of the glow plug takes patience tho. Good Luck

If you have 9gs, they're likely all swollen up. Don't break them off, or you will be pulling heads to get the ends out.

I only ever had one stuck, and yeah, cranking the engine over with the PMD cable off blew it right outta there. Do one at a time, make sure it's all un-threaded, drape a rag over it to catch it, and give 'er a crank or three.

AK and Jim thanks.
I like that idea. I will give it a try tomorrow. I was thinking of cutting a notch in a 45 degree angle tiped pry bar Kind of like a big plastic moulding removal tool on steroids.
Any other ideas would still be welcome as it gets the brain ticking.

When I replaced my 9g plugs, they all came out like they were just installed. Not one of them were swollen. I guess that is the exception. Out of curiosity, what does cause the swelling that is mentioned so much?

Mine are all rotted clean off with the head.....:mad2: When i bought the truck one worked, but now none work....:mad2: I have one that was covered in grease, so i could get it out. Another three are rotted clean off with the head, so only tapping and drilling would work. And the other four are rusty rounded so bad that they look about half the size they should....:mad2:. So to end my issue i bought another engine....:D Mine has orig inj. and gp's. So eveything is shot.:mad2: Sucks...... The one i was able to take out was not sweld up. Had a blonde moment the next day i tried to start it...:D Heard a big puffing sound, ooops, forgot to put back in the gp...

I'm getting ready to go work on it again. I do know how you fill

If a tip happens to break off, remove the injector. you can retrieve the tip trough there most times with a small magnet as it'll be in plain view laying in the precup.

Thats good to know to and it makes since now that I think about it.

I did try cranking the engine over to pop/blow them out and nothing happend. I am just about ready to force them out and take my chances with a magnet like bison said.

could take the injector out, have someone hold a shopvac to the injector hole while you drill/force old glow out. will no doubt get sucked right into shopvac along with all other small particles.

Taking your head off isn't as big of a job as you think. You could take it off, have it cleaned/rebuilt at a machien shop for little money and then put in 4 new. Alot cheaper and easier than rebuilding entire engine.

I think i'd rather pull the head. Don't think a drill would even fit in those areas. I'm going to give it the pry/force out method first unless someone comes up with a better idea before tomorrow. At worst case I'll have to pull the head/s anyway.

See, i cant pull the heads....:mad2: Look at my pic of the manifold, and what is supposed to be a bolt. I HAVE A RUST ISSUE.....:mad2: It would cost so much money and time in tapping rebulding , and while im doing that might as well get rid of the 200k mile injectors, fix the hole in my exhaust manifold, fix every oil leak, and so on. So in my case it would be easier to just start fresh and work on an engine that is already out...

Here is a pic of the exhaust hole, i patched it for now.... There must be another one somewhere, it still smokes bad from under the hood when you start it...
