Hi guys, need help finding the timing spec for a 98 6.5 non turbo w/mechanical pump. We have the replacement engine in my tool truck but really need these spec's, any help would be appreciated :???:

Well, a mechanical pump generally gets timed "by ear" as most people don't have access to the proper tool to time it. It basically uses a timing light deal that picks up the pulse from the # inj . 6.5's AFAIK have an adaptor to clamp onto by the IP. The older 6.2's don't that I have ver seen. Kent moore made a tmiing light for doing this but good luck finding one. Snap On also had the MT480, again good luck finding one with the prper adaptor/probe. Most 6.x engines I have ever worked on with the DB2 usually end up with the mark on the IP about a matchbook cover to the drivers side from the mark on the case cover unless you can find the timing light to do it properly. There may be other tools that can do it but as far as I have seen I am only aware of the Snap On and Kent Moore, both of which are obsolete and no longer in production.
The engine should start good and sound a little marlbly.. If the motor is too quiet it may be retarded, if it's really loud may be too advanced.

Start at the timing marks aligned on the front of the pump to pump cover. Hit 45 MPH with little throttle. You should have a diesel rattle at 45 MPH. Add some throttle and thus heat to the precups and the rattle should go away. This is ideal timing. Continued rattle is too far advanced.

X2 At idle you can also tell by ear. Beware of new injectors that also add clatter and make the engine sound different.

Going to far advanced will get you black smoke when the cold advance is on that goes away when it kicks out. To retarded and it will not start well and smoke white.

As the chain stretches you give it some advance, in about 10K miles.

fwiw I have timed alot of these and never seen one yet that ran good with the marks lined up. I usually just start with it kicked to the drivers side. Course I'll I work on is wrung out stretched out old whores.....:rof:
