Truck started to miss on the way home from work Friday, so Sat morning started to "investigate" ended up tearing it down found the #6 piston cracked. Anyone got a spare I could get? I know all the stuff I SHOULD do but lets please not get into that...... Just need a Piston for my truck.... Help me if you can guys.

Might have one, waiting to recieve it. Local friend from the "other" site says he might have one and will drop it off if he does....

I have eight standard 6.5 pistons if you need a piston let me know.

did it score the wall? I can tear down a engine if you need ap iston bad, but it sounds like you are taken care of. good luck!

Thanks guys,
I haven't got one yet but just waiting for it to be dropped off.
I will keep yuns informed as to what is going on.

Cyl wall is OK, no scratches in fact I still see crosshatching in all 8. Gonna replace rod bearings while I am in there. Really don't know the cause of this failure but seems to be just dumb luck with a bad piston. Crack is big enough to stick my finger nail in and it goes all the way down the side to the wrist pin. there are about 5 total cracks but the big one is a little over half way across the top.

I would not bother with rod bearings unless you had low oil pressure or can see copper in them. The select fit may be tighter than just slamming a set of bearings in. But I don't know your method or plans on this... I would pull inspect the other 7 pistons because why would only just 1 crack... I have run a cracked piston too long and it burned through scoring up the cyl.

Got both heads off and all the others look fine not so much as a scratch.

As for the bearings, the top (or piston side) of the one I have out shows a few layers have been worn away, not to copper yet but I think it is worth the effort. Also has a few "questionable" marks on the lower half, nothing I can catch a fingernail on but.... Just think I should

Started the truck Fri night to head home from work and walked over to help a buddy look at his truck and something sounded odd enough for me to look back at the truck and think "sounds funny" but passed it off as cold start and it'll warm up and sound fine.

Never even gave it a second thought. Drove home and along the way when I stopped at a stop sign (9 miles from work) Noticed that the truck was running rough.

Pulled in the drive at home (only about a mile later) thinking it might be the harmonic balancer causing the shake, popped the hood to investigate while at an idle and found smoke.
Popped the oil fill cap and looked like a old steam engine puffing away in time with the miss... Not anything else odd (noises or nothing)

Actually hoped to find one of rocker arm keepers to be bad and off, but no such luck....

Mine was cracked from a cooling system issue, bad fan clutch, and getting it hot.

The pistons are also a select fit with C and D (and perhaps other letters) stamped in them for sizes. #7 & #8 are looser tolerances due to running hotter. I am not sure the details, but, you may want to look into this. I ignored this on my 6.2 engine when I let it eat a screw clamp and replaced all the slugs with NOS.

I had read somwhere about the diff piston sizes. Green machine dropped off 4 pistons for me today so hopefully one of those will work.
She only has less than 139,000 miles on her, but I guess it was time for #6 to go.... gotta look into the injector thing....
Got a friend that picked up the heads today, and getting the valves done since they did not seem to be sealing properly.
Gonna go to parts store and order the bearings and the gaskets tomorrow so hope to have it back on the road soon.

kinda off topic, but still pertaining to your truck, how did the air ride seat system work out? you did end up finding 95-00 burgundy buckets, correct? I think you would get a few followers on a project thread, air ride is pretty awesome.

turned out nice, wife loves it, if I get the time and think of it I could post some pics.

On another note, Got a piston that will work, changed over and ready to go in, got a text from the bud with heads............... CRACKED between valves on BOTH heads. DAMMIT MAN! This shhhhtuf is gettin annoying and expensive! Wife went in and picked up gaskets and bearings I had ordered.

Cracks between the valves aren't really a death sentence. LOTS of 6.5's running around with a crack or two.

Judgment call.

Haven't actually seen them, still at buddys house. He is gonna bring 'em back tomorrow, so I'll look closely at 'em. He says that they are cracked wors at one end. I assume that would be the end that was at the firewall since these engines have cooling issues with those cyls. The valves were not sealing properly that's why I had sent them off to be done.

Lock n stitch not sure it is spelled right, makes a kit that installs a hollow brass sleeve between the coolant passage in the head. It is an easy thing to do. Kit is 150 for driver, reamer. anaerobic sealer, and sleeves, no leaks ever again. I stitched my heads with the kit and sleeved them, still running.
