Is there any problems with older 6.2 or 6.5 N/A blocks compared to my 99 6.5
 
The older blocks are better? Because of no turbo used or being a stronger casting?
 
Let me guess: The older 6.2 is a survivor and your 6.5 got voted off the show with a failure?

Start with every 6.2 and 6.5 block has crack potential.
Less power means less stress. Still can crack! So you can check this to see if your 6.2 candidate has some cracks that will get it voted off the show soon after being put in.

Lots of info on here about doing this 6.2 to replace a blown 6.5. Off the top of my head after doing this myself and reading about other issues.

Two piece rear main old 6.2's vs. 1 piece for the 6.5 and later 6.2's. Oil pan issues as MGW ran into.
Different heads although you can use 6.5 heads no problem and use all 6.2 heads but the 1982 course thread injector heads with a tight fit for the turbo manifold to injector clearance.
Different head gaskets and precups on 6.2's and NA 6.5's.
6.5 Electronic injection CPS on the timing cover and HB difference.
Ceramic coated pistons not found in 6.2's...
 
I had a buddy try to get me a 6.6 Duramax but the deal went south. My current motor runs OK but doesn't run smooth to my liking. I think the previous owner hurt it to some degree. I have been contemplating find another engine and rebuild it and have it ready in case this motor ever let's go. Or build a low end grunt gasser but still leave it turbocharged for the torque. A Cummins swap is pricey due to alot of $$$ up front for the purchase. There is a guy south of here that has N/A 6.2's and 6.5's for sale complete with a tranny for $600 each which ever I want (he has alot of them). So........... the big question is which is the best route to take. I even have a running 454 complete truck I can pick up for $1800. It is easier to start a engine piece by piece than big purchases, as money is tight.
Options:
1) Find another 6.5 TD and hope the block is good
2) Pick up a 6.5 N/A motor from the guy down south and use the short block
3) buy a Chinese block and build up a replacement short block
4) Build a turbo high torque gasser SB or BB
5) save for a Cummins

How old are the injectors, miles?
Run a compression test.
Engine mounts and tranny mounts failed?
Look for the reason yours doesn't run smooth before you yank or buy a engine.

My 6.2 has a shake to it as well with new injectors.
 
Wow $600 for a long block and a tranny. I would get that from someone you trust that it wasnt garbage when pulled. Then build up the engine the way you want it while its out and even if yours doesnt give up you might transplant it just becuase its built like you wanted. Does he have any 92-94 6.2/6.5 NAs? One of them would be ideal.
 
Injectors are about 19,000+ miles or almost two years old. Mounts are new. IP is a year old LP is about 1 1/2 years old showing good pressure. It had a miss a few months ago and I had it set to -1.94 and was playing with my car code program and set it to TDCO learn and dropped it to -1.85 the miss went away for a month but now it is back. And tends to tug a lot when I tow my trailer. It starts perfectly every time and is fairly smooth at idle a low speed cruise. I have not done a compression test.
