I was cruising craigslist today and had to race to the phone to call on this deal.
82- 6.2 diesel w/ 120,000 miles. In running order. $100:yikes::yikes:
Yep , that's right. A red block 6.2. It still has most of the red paint under the grease and grime. I've never seen one with this fuel filter set-up. Maybe just a water separator?:???:
It has a inline fuel heater the same as my 82 olds 5.7 diesel had. Block was cast in october of 81.

isn't that the year we were wondering about a possible forged crank?
Yes it is:D This one has had the intake off before but I'd bet the bottom end is all original. I'll have to take a peak:skep: I'm wondering if it has the cast rocker arms also:???: I have another one with the 81 cast date in the same place as this but it has been rebuilt so who knows what's in it.

She'll have the cast rockers. Those went up to ~83 or so. Being an 81 casting if there were any with forged cranks, that'd be one of them as that'd be the first casting, since the 6.2 made is official debut in '82.

That fuel system was used up until ~83 as well. There were 2 filters. One on the firewall which was the primary filter/water separator(with a drain at the bottom of the filter). The secondary filter was another spin on on the back of the intake.

It wasn't a bad system IMO, but i guess it cost more than the box filter style. The WIF sensor was actually in the tank in that setup.

The fuel would come from the tank to the primary filter. It would be sucked through the primary filter then run down to the mech LP. From there it's be pumped through the inline heating element to the secondary filter, and then makes it's way to the IP.

Nice buy. :D

The steel fuel line from the mechanical pump to the firewall is there yet. I wondered if it didn't have another filter on the firewall. The olds diesel equipped cars and pick-ups had the water sensor in the tank.
I figured for $100 I couldn't get burned too bad. The only real thing missing was the #8 injector line. What sucks is the same guy sold a banks turbo set-up for $200 a couple weeks ago.
Here's another one with even lower miles but a bigger price tag. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/pts/2274749513.html

All 82s and 83s had the twin filter setup IIRC. They could've just left it on the truck when the engine came out. IIRC there was a rubber line that connected the metal line form the LP to the firewall mounted filter. I've only seen one 83 in my life, and I didn't pay as much attention to the filter system as i should've. Then steel fuel line ran back to the tank from that filter.

Your just drowning in Red blocks over there aren't you? I'd be glad to take one off your hands. :hihi:

Sucks on the Banks kit. They are getting harder and harder to find used. It was 100% right place right time when i found mine on that junkyard truck, but since the turbo is still in what i'd call unknown condition(haven't installed it yet) I don't know if i've been burned or not yet. There's a slight bit of side to side play, but no forward backward play. Other than that i know nothing about it.

No Forged crank

I popped the oil pan off. No forged crank in this one:mad2: Looked the same as a cast crank from a 6.5 on the parting lines. Pretty clean inside. No easily visible cracks in the main webs. The timing chain was a little loose, but some came that loose from the factory. I don't have any immediate plans for it so I oiled the cylinders up good and sealed it up for storage.

I figure it has 'em. Don't tear it down just to put it back together for storage. I figure you have other irons in the fire. :)

I was eyeing up a 81 olds cutlass w/5.7 diesel[$850] to put this in but it sold. Would have been much easier than putting it in my 81 cutlass gasser.

That would be different. My neighbor has a Cutlass that 'had' the 5.7 diesel. It's now got a 350 gasser. ROCKET of course. The car is actually solid. It's been off the road in a garage for 15+ years. He said he parked it because the water pump started leaking......

:hihi:Note how many miles are on the 81 cutlass in my sig. It was a granny car before a friends kid got ahold of it and blew the original 3.8 in less than a week:???::rolleyes5: It sat at my house for 6 years when I told him to give me the title. I put another low mile 3.8 in it but it won't run right. :mad2::WTF: I'm thinking a diesel will solve that problem:agreed::D

Wow that is a clean Cutlass. I like the black and red with the slots.

Was there different versions of the 3.8? Odd-fire or even-fire? Could this be the culprit of running crappy?

My K5 is the same setup as that. Not sure how much of it is stock (found an OLD carter electric pump not hooked up on the frame, so who knows) but i get line to the firewall/primary filter, then metal line-rubber-metal to the mechanical lift pump (the rubber is there to accommodate engine movement i assume), running under the intake manifold. Then metal line from the LP to the secondary filter, metal line to rubber for the IP (is that right? if not, i'll make some proper line when i replace the IP and IM)
