Well it's finally together. Rebuilt the bottom end on 1 of the pumps. Scrounged 2 electric motors. Built a custom stand for 1 of them. Bought 2 new motor starters. Fixed a broken pitless for a friend of mine who wired up the controls. Has an alternating relay so both pumps wear evenly also added a timer so when empty 1 motor would delay before starting to minimize the start up surge. Total investment about $500 new cost about $5k.

more air and cheaper to run. It's a 5 hp compressor until the pressure drops below a certain psi, then the 2nd one kicks in essentially giving you a 10 hp compressor.

I was wondering if it was a way they get two stage air. One up to 100psi and the second to take it to 175psi.

Nice! Somewhat unusual. The power savings would have to be substantial.

Nice!!!

I'm gonna have to post pics of our "new to us" compressor. Definitely as big as this one!

Well I did run into a snag. Turns out it was originally setup to supply air for an office buildings HVAC controls. It was set up to run at 100 psi. I tried to adjust it up and ran into 2 problems. The pop off valves were only good to 140 psi and the pressure switches couldn't be turned up high enough. So I have bought and waiting on shipping 3 new pop offs and 2 pressure switches. Managed to find american made stuff on ebay and spent another $75. So that brings me up to around $600

Do the street lights dim when the 2nd motor kicks in? :D

So an update. I thought I had it all finished but I ended up having to replace one of my motors as it was drawing too many amps. Almost forgot that I had another motor. The other thing that didn't go as planned was I had a pop off valve on one of the pumps that kept blowing off at just over 150 psi ,it is rated for 175 psi, there's like 5 of them on this thing and it didn't matter if I switched it with another one or not the one kept blowing off. In the process of changing out the other pump I also realized that anything over 150 psi and I was in danger of overloading the motors. So I killed two birds with one stone backed off my max pressure from 175 to 150 anf voila no more issues. Another positive note is that when I used it sandblasting I don't belive the 2nd pump ever kicked in, one pump would keep up. I'll have to keep an eye on that as that's almost hard to believe.

so another update I sandblasted for about 20 minutes this morning (finally got my water issues taken care of) and verified that only 1 pump was running but to my suprize it would actually catch up and turn off while I was sandblasting. I'm a happy camper

Yep, when you have a big enough tank and a powerful compressor, it will do that. My buddy said he was sandblasting with our compressor when the last owner had it and it shut off while he was sandblasting. Surprised the hell out of him, lol.
