Possibly new to me motorhome

I'm wheelin and dealin on a 99 class A motorhome with a 6.5L TD in it. As soon as I nail down the price I'm going to go look at it.

I want to see it, hear it, smell it, feel it and drive it. All the things one should do before buying it. It only has 68,000 miles on it, but it's still possible to have issues.

I did good on my K3500 dually with 58,000 miles on it, now hopefully I can score on this one.

A guy can't have too many 6.5s in the yard. :agreed:

Be careful. Look what the addiction has done to my yard:eek:

It's a slippery slope you're on, Jody ... :D

Take some pics when you go to see it, so the rest of us can have a look... we kind of like 6.5s too!

There has been one listed on & off on Craigslist here in ILL for close to a year. It's older like a 93 then the one you are going to look at with about 115K on it. This one will prolly end up going for about $10K.

Many for sale right now. especially with the rising diesel prices again, don't get taken by the moment...I love my 6.5 but if I could find one with a cummins for near the same cost, that would be my choice. I like the looks of this one, but IMO he needs to come down more on the price.

I haven't been to see it yet, but these are some of the photos that I have. I'm still waiting for his response to my offer.

Wow, that is a nice one! The exterior stickers still look good, definately stored indoors as they said

Imagine the possibility of the ultimate addiction, to actually live in a 6.5 powered home

Lol, there would be no where to escape? Dream come true or living nightmare???

OP, Don't expect this motorhome to be traveling as fast as the modern diesels would. Since you havn't seen it, you havn't driven it. I'd expect it to be big and slow, and maybe even right lane 45-50 climbing large mountain passes. Expecting anymore may lead to dissapointment.

Definanlty need to find out what year the powertrain is from, because sometimes is lags in motorhomes. Check out what water pump and clutch config it has. Is it OBD2 or OBD1, or maybe even mechanical? If a 6.5 truck/sub with a 6000lb sail of a camper behind it can go 75mph up grades with no problem, then you shouldnt have too many problems with its power capability. Was EGR left on it?

Yes, there are a lot of questions that I have too. It's at a used car dealership and the seller doesn't know too much (or claims he doesn't) about the history of it.

I remember awhile back on one of the forums, there was a guy asking questions about curing overheating problems on his 6.5 diesel pusher. I don't recall the make, year or size of his motorhome, but I do remember him saying that his engine specs stated 230 hp. If that's a possibility, then I probably wouldn’t do a pcm upgrade. Just exhaust, intake, fuel delivery, cooling mods and gauges.

Here is the VIN if somebody has a way of checking it out for me.

VIN: 5B4KP37F4X3308545

He claims the title says ’99 but the build date of the rig is 1/2000, so maybe it is a ’99 chassis?
I’m kind of excited about this one, as I’ve been looking for one of these for years. Well ever since I was hooked on the 6.5 drug in 94. This is the best shape, lowest miles and lowest priced one that I’ve found.

I just hope that it’s all that it appears to be.

I'm available to ride shotgun on the way out and back. Could make the drive a lot easier. You know how to reach me, Jody.

Thats common for these, because they arent designed until after all the trucks. If you were to get service or recalls it would be for a 99 power and drivetrain for like a 5500 Topkick or something like that.

If its electronically controlled, that thing would be a real dog in stock form without a decent PCM reflash, which doesnt always mean higher temperatures. Problem is getting one too advanced, and then also the older cooling systems we know sucked. If it has the spin on clutch cooling system no modification required, unless there are issue then the free fan clutch mod or an HD clutch with DMax fan. There is no way that it wouldnt keep it cool if that clutch engages. That and make sure not to use too much anti-freeze like my parents who thought you had to use "coolant" in the radiator every time it was low, so it was always dark green and wouldnt keep the engine cool.

That is 68,000 hard, foot to the floor, miles where a gas engine gets within 10% of the 6.5's fuel economy. This is Heavy Duty use for a Light Duty engine. Just be aware that you will get to know your 6.5 in a intricate manner. Bright side is the replacement used surplus engines are fairly cheap. Downside is you collect parts and run out of garage space...

Nice looking MH. I dont think I have ever seen a class A that small before. It looks to be about a 24 footer? Not knocking it most around here are HUGE. Seems to me it would be about the right size for mom and dad trips though.

I often think that slow heavy vessel to push around is less abuse on an engine. Here's why:

RPM ranges are always gradual. Never 'hammering it' up to redline fast and / or often.

The vessel being so large forces you to use slow, weight management movements to control inertia.

Young kids probably never drove it.

As long as heat is kept in check, The worst thing you can probably do is bog it down I would think. Letting her rip at 2500rpm-2700 pulling WOT I don't think beats on it as much as fast bursts to redline.

I have been looking for a motorhome about this size powered by a 6.5 for about 10 years now. It's just the right size now that we are empty nesters and a smaller rig means I probably can tow more. (tow car, boat etc)

"Now you have to find a boat with a 6.5 and then you´ll be complete."

I've also been looking for a boat too. I did find a 50 ft aluminum houseboat hull with twin gas engines. I know there are 6.5 marine engines out there for a transplant.

Now that retirement is merely months away, all I need is more projects. :)

The motorhome is a beauty, it wont last long at a reasonable price. Wholesale is probably like $12K on it, they arent selling good in this economy, which makes it a buyers market, but at the same time people are still looking for good used stuff at reasonable prices.
