Hey guys, im hopefully going to look at a 82 blazer with the 6.2 this weekend. It has 3.73 rears and a 700r4 (i think all of the diesels had this correct?). Anyways im wondering what you guys think would be a good estimate for fuel mileage?? It will be doing a fair amount of highway driving if I buy it.

Looks nice in the pictures, hopefully its that nice in person! My biggest problem is trying to get the guy to stay after work to show it to me.

And while im asking questions....is there anything specific to the 6.2 that I should look out for? Im very familiar with the 6.5 but not as much with the 6.2. I know they are very similar, but just wondering if there was anything you thought I should keep an eye out for.

Thanks for the help

If the engine is in good shape along with a good set of injectors and a healthy injection pump 22-25 HWY is definately not outside of reality.

This is with close to stock tires. Now if you have some big O'll super swampers of 40 inch variety and are real agressive on the throttle, probably much less.

I had an 82 Jimmy 6.2 and between Portland Or and LA it would run 24 + at freeway speeds.

Coming back up over the Vine and then over the mountains back into southern Oregon the numbers would fall off a tad down to high teens maybe.

Easy freeway running at 65 can see some impressive numbers for sure.

City running can see 18 if your not crazy on the stoplight to stoplight grand Prix.

6.2 is the same engine except with a slightly smaller bore.
Same stroke, same rods, same almost everything.

Parts will swap quite a bit on these.

The late 6.2 (88 0n) had the same crank and block as the 6.5 except the smaller bore.

You can take a 6.2 and add the 6.5 turbo and the electronic IP and stuff with a little creative swapping.

The turbo wont fit on the older trucks if it has AC though

(BANKS STUFF does though)

the 700r4 in the earlier years were real POS. Expect tranny problems. That may also be a redblock with coarse injs. The rear diffs were garbage too. Plan on an 8 lug swap.

Haha yea it was the one in Glastonbury. I had cash and a trailer ready
to go but the guy wouldn't work with me on a time to see it. They only wanted to show it during their business hours as they didn't want to have to go back. And well I can only do Sundays or after 6, so I kinda gave up on that one. It looks to be in real nice shape, although it hasn't been driven in 4 years he said. He said 1800 will buy it if you need another project Kenny :D

And as for your Jimmy, I think I will pass. 200k miles
dosent bother me but 300 kind of does. Do you have good luck with vehicles on eBay? I think that's where my suburban is going in the very near future

The bay is a great place to sell just about anything.

Sold a 95 Burb on Ebay a few years ago. Went to a nice fellow is Kansas City MO

Just be very specific about payment and dont accept any wierd checks.

I insist on Postal money orders or CASH . Paypal is great but ya take a little hit for using the service though.

Make sure that you require at least a $500 downpayment thats done at the close of the auction and the remainder upon pickup.

Too bad the 82 Blazer deal fell through.

Yeah the early 700R was a real POS but most all of those have long since failed and been either updated or replaced.

The Red motors did have the coarse thread injectors but thats not an issue.

The best 700R is the ones just before the electronics came out 87-88 right in there with the "K" on the bell housing.

There were a number of serious upgrades in this tranny over the years.

The input shaft was enlarged, pump vanes increased in numbers a few times, a second valve body added plus several other changes.

Even with the factory changes, the 700R needs many more upgrades to be truely what you could call reliable..

The 700R is really too small internally for anything other than light duty passenger use unless it sees some serious upgrades.

The last one I did cost about $1500 out of pocket and thats with me doing the bench work.

Hope you find a K5

Thanks for the info missy!

Now that you mention the 700r4 with the "k", I am going to have to go look at the one I have in the barn. I took it out of an 88 p/u so it might just be worth keeping if it as good as you say.

As for another blazer. Not sure what I am going to do yet. My trucks have been dropping like flies and i still need a snowplow truck (or blazer) this winter. Even my father's 89' has developed some nasty frame rot thats starting to become an issue! I can do the barnyard and such with the tractors, but i still need a truck for my driveways. I might just end up buying a 1500 gasser p/u just to save on the initial purchase cost. I havent bought anything gas for quite a while now, but with funds being low i might just do so. Plus i might not be so tempted to modify everything :D

If your little prize in the barn is a "K" case, its definately a keeper.

This series has the best parts to "START" with anyway.

One of the weakest parts is the Sun Shell. The center hubs break out of the stock parts.

There is one on the market called "The Beast" thats a good upgrade.

X2 on that. First rear and only rear end I have seen with a tooth broken off the ring gear was on our 1988 6.2 (1500) Surburban. Trans started slipping in OD just after the glow plugs were eaten in the engine it was trade in time.

The 4x4 transfer case always leaked.

The MPG for 4x4 is 18 MPG or so. Climbing the Rockies made a bad impact on MPG. Still did better than the 350 version MPG wise but we were being passed by the 350. 350 stunk and we were smoking...
