Had to run into downtown Chicago this morning. Got back in my shop at 1:30 and decided today was the day I've been putting off too long.
Changed both front and rear differentials. 115k :rolleyes5: since I last did that. Rear the oil was pretty clean but I sure didn't like the looks of the front oil (lots of silver sheenl in it) and the crap on the plug (see pic of both dirty.and cleaned) Filled both with Amsoil Severe Gear from Wrecker. Used the gear oil tank I made years ago. Makes it alot easier.
Changed the Transfer case that had 90k since I went to the 3qt Mobil 1 5w30 fill. That was clean enough. Refilled the same through the sensor hole at top of the pic..
Drained and refilled the trans 1st time in 64k. Filter had 27k on it. No problems there. Using Dex VI still.

I included a pic of the RH side of the TC for proof of no pump rub through as yet at 118,500 mi. Or am I just dreaming?):h

Mike, the plugs look about the same as mine did both times I have changed the fluid.
That's a pretty slick set up you have there to fill up the differentials. What is that on the bottom of you Allison filter?

I gotta admit, the air tank thing is really cool!

There's something satisfying about doing your own maintenance. I've done my rear diff twice in 71k and it didn't look bad either time. Changed the trans fluid something like 3 times now also.

Man I have yet to do my differentials. I need to find the time.

I've done the front diff. 3X now and usually it is still clean, but as you mentioned, a silver sheen on the plug that had to be wiped off. I'm on my second 5 gallon pail of Transynd and change out the pan and filter every summer. The gear oil setup you made looks sweet, great idea. With the pump rub you never know until its too late. I put in the M/A kit at 86K and it showed no sign of wear. With my luck, if I didn't put in the kit, it would have gone at 87K. LOL

Looking at your tank for gear oil, I have seen something else similiar if anyone has a boat with steering and throttle cable. I used to drive a concrete truck and the controls at the back of the truck used the same type of cables that boats use to control the throttle and the other for the speed/direction of the barrel. The mechanic at work, when the cables were getting tough to move would use a tank like you have, half fill it with anti-freeze, put around 30 psi in the tank and had 2 different size pipes that connect to the cables, as each had a different diamater. Overnight the anti-freeze worked its way through the lines and you would swear they put new cables on the truck.

A very poweful magnet. the kind where you put 2 together, you are gonna struggle to get them apart. I keep 2 on the bottom of the engine oil filter too.
We use them to trigger safetys in meat processing machines. They'll pull a switch in through about 1/4" of stainless steel.

Have you ever cut a filter open to see what stuck to that area?
