MAF Sensor Bad or Edge?

Since a trip to MN a month ago, (-12 degrees F) My edge does not sense air intake temperature below 32 degrees. I have also developed a smoking exhaust, at idle only. I am wondering if my Air Flow Sensor has gone bad? Any way to test it?
 
Have you taken the Edge off and run it stock to see if it continues?
 
Unplugged to Edge and still smokes badly at idle. The only reason I lean toward the MAF sensor is because I have unplugged it before for troubleshooting and it smoked. That combined with the air intake not going below 32 leads me to beleive there is an issue with the maf sensor.

For testing it I am thinking there are no electronics in it that it can maybe just be tested for continuity or resistance across the sensors. Anyone have any experience with these. If it were a cheap part, I would just replace it. Cost is over $200 from the stealer though!
 
I've never heard of a Mass air flow sensor going bad unless you broke or touched the components. In addition it would throw a code.

You can get sensor cheap at Rockauto.com. I would clean yours first before replacing. I'm also surprised you get smoke just unplugging it also.

I would check balance rates on your injectors .
 
The MAF sets the upper limit of the fuel that can be delivered to the engine so it could cause smoke. Not that it has to cause smoke. I would find someone with a scantool and look to see if the MAF is reading and that it changes values with engine speed before I did anything.

head to the parts store and try some electrical parts cleaner first.
I dealt with this issue earlier this year. Spray it first like stacks04 says. You can also look at the sensor itself and you will notice a wire going across (side to side) and then there is one on the side (front to rear). If these wires are broken (doesn't go completely end to end) the MAF sensor is bad. However, mine didn't smoke, and as a matter of fact it ran purty good except it kept throwing CEL and codes. So, check for codes. Autozone will do it for free if you don't have access to a scanner.

That's what was wrong with mine. I was fortunate to be smiled upon by a guy here on the forum who did me a real solid, and shall remain nameless.....but you know who you are:

Stopped by AutoZone for a scan today. He could not get power to his scanner and said I must have a fuse out or a loose wire. Is the plug fuse protected? I think there are only 5 wires going to the plug. Is that normal?
 
That is interesting .... only 2 of my three cigarette lighter plugs work? Are all three on the same fuse?

Not sure but one might be only hot when keyed up. Bottom line all you have to do is check all your fuses or at least pull the fuse block covers and identify which might cover the aux 12 volt plugs.

What Steve is saying is the OBD port is powered up by the same circuit the cigarette lighters are wired to. In other words when using a Tech II there is no need to power up the scan tool with another source of 12 volt in our trucks. When I use my Tech II on other vehicles (older) I need to use the cigarette lighter to power up the Tech II.

Sounds like the scan tool that Autozone is using NEEDS a 12 volt source beyond the OBD port. If you have to return there as it's your only source of a scan tool then check your fuses. Perhaps a fuse is blown or the Autozone dude or dudet (female) doesn't know what he's or she's doing.
