Anyone ever lower a 4x4 and still retain the front drive axles ,I have seen a couple and and they have had the front axles removed
 
If you lower more than a few inches you put the CV axles in such a bind that they will destroy themselves...real bad angles. Haven't done it myself but a friend of mine did and ran into the same issues everyone else has. That's why you see the guys remove them.

Im sure there is some custom work that can be done to spindles, control arms, and frame to make it work. Maybe notch the frame and raise the axle but that would get close to or hit the pan, you could then possibly modify the pan. Also they build high angle CV's for the guys that run high lift off of torsion bars so in theory they would work the same in a lowered application.
 
Depending on the drop, OEM axles would be OK to a point. One would think they would function OK at level or slightly up, since they are usually running on a downward angle normally.
 
I tried to find the pictures of his CV's as they were so obviously out of whack it was scary to look at. But the pic links are no longer good... :(

I had a 4/6 Drop on my 2500HD for a while.

It Looked Good, Handled Awesome, but Hitting a Bump Bigger than the Norm made things Clank & Bang Around. Never actually Bottomed Out, but things were Banging around Underneath.
 
The DURAMAX guys lower them down all the time, it's the only way to keep from tearing the front ends up under big power. Not sure about the older GMT-400 though as I don't think our CV's are designed to collapse in that much or not.
