There are a couple pieces of ford running around that I've heard a really radical sounding turbo. The whistle is distinct, very noticeable and is loud. Actually, it has a sort of high frequency twitter to it, as well. What features make a turbo do this and do those features match up in any capacity with a turbo that would suit a 6.5?

A straight pipe on most any ford turbo diesel will whistle like no tomorrow. Maybe the whistle your referring to comes from the stock compound turbo setups found on the 6.0 liter

Sounds neat the first time you hear something like that, but much not after that.

My brother's neighbor's kid has that kind of turbo and exhaust. The neighborhood association is debating whether to invest in a sound actuated IED . . .

Actually, I am glad the kid did that to his Ferd as my brother's neighbors stopped their comments about the Burb's IDI and 4" exhaust :D

Nothing like a Communist HOA of 100+ more landloards to tell you what to do or what you can or can not do with your property. What Freedom and tolerance for others? And as you found out you are target #2!

Yes noise can sound good till you have to take a long drive and it gets old to the point of fatigue.

I know the fords you're talking about and I haven't heard anything whistle quite like them. An open intake and exhaust will obviously give you more of that whistle on the stock 6.5 turbo. An hx has a nice whistle to it once you remove the silencer ring.
Here is a quick clip of what my old 6.5 sounded like. hx-35 14cm exhaust housing, 4 inch straight pipe dumped over the rear axle and 4 inch intake pushing 18psi with the silencer ring removed, sounded like a semi to me.

Patch sounds good in town - from blocks away. On long trips with a trailer the 454 like drone of the full power exhaust gets fatiguing. Stop on an off ramp and realize just how loud the radio is just to be heard.

Just FYI, the "stock compounds" referred to earlier are on 6.4L Powerstrokes, not the 6.0L. 6.0L Fords have an electronic VGT turbocharger. The distinctive whine you hear comes from the VGT turning the vanes down to a 9cm turbine housing which spins the turbine up fairly high. Add that to a straight pipe, and you get nasty loud whistle. Some year 6.0L's had a different turbine wheel, which created a higher pitch tone.

ok, so it sounds like there's not much chance of this old 6.5 sounding like that, but the whistle SS Force posted sounds great to me. Does the ATT sound as good? A while back, I had asked about the HX 35 or 40 vs the ATT and it sounded like the ATT was the better choice, although maybe I cannot have performance and the distinct whistle, both?

I don't hear my ATT whistle, maybe if I opened the pass. window. My right ear has some hearing loss due to a straight piped 540 V8 Perkins.

HX35 will get you better performance and whistle and fairly simple to install. ATT does whistle but not until the upper boost ranges, like 22psi+, which without some extensive mods, will be hard to reach

Does the ATT sound as good?

It is rare that mine will whistle which is OK by me as I do not need more reasons for the Wife to hate the Burb ;)

Highest range of boost I tend to see when pulling hard is ~12 psi and at that level it is more of a whooshing sound than whistle. For the most part, it quietly does its job which is just fine with me :)

Thanks for entertaining my child-like tendencies to want to have the "cool effect" still going on. I don't use my truck anymore, for a daily driver, so for it to be a little loud on the turbo doesn't bother me a bit. Some day I may change my mind, but there was something etched into me at a young age, seeing the big white hood, on dad's Freightliner, in front of me when I went on trips with him and hearing the turbo for thousands of miles.

The 03 and very early 04 6.0L powerstrokes have DISTINCTIVE turbo whistle to them. I don't remember exactly what made the early ones so loud, but it was short lived due to failures. The distinctive sound is sought after to say the least by many because it is quite loud.

I like whistle sounding turbos, and turbos are definately not my arena- but...
Whistle real quick while reading this... You pushed a lot of air through a tiny opening in your lips. Open up your mouth and breathe is far more productive. Seems to me more appropriate sized orifice doesn't whistle. It just moves the air through...
