Hi, I have a 95 6.5T burb, as well as various other half assed rides ranging from early 90's to early 2000's. I would really like to purchase a scan tool of some type that will work well for a wide range of vehicles without breaking the bank. I think the most I would like to spend is around $1500. is this possible?

I was first considering the old red brick (snap on MT2500 series) but I'm starting to feel that I may be spending to much for outdated technology/platform. It seems you have to spend around $500 for these with a decent set of cartridges?

Is it better to spend more and get a used Ethos, Solus, OR Midis? or an OTC, etc. product?

Or is their a good PC based program that I can hook to my laptop that is good. It seems their is so many options out their, I have no experience with any bi-directional scanners so some personal experience would be great. thanks for all the help, I love this site!

Unfortunately, the OBD-I GM and OBD-II are not the same scanner.

IIRC, there is a version of Actron that can read both OBD-I and OBD-II.

The Engh GMTDScanTech is the only one for OBD-I GM 6.5L diesel as Tim said.

Moral of the story, you need to have a few of them to cover the different model years before 96 (OBD-I) and 96+ (OBD-II).
Then there is a lot of other standard like the European cars, etc.

is there any software that you could load on a lap top and plug in yourself?

Thanks for the tips, sorry I was away from the old computer for the holidays. I'll check that out, thanks
