Hello guys I am looking at bidding on a military surplus truck and turning into a work/outdoors truck.

http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=3565450

1986 Chevrolet Truck, Carryall, Powered by a 6.2 liter diesel V-8 engine, automatic transmission, two speed transfer case, four wheel drive.
its a truck lol but they call it a carryall anyways before I make this a work truck there is a few things I need to know.

First what do I need to look out for in this model any major things I can deal with some minor issues if they dont add up to bad.

Will this thing eat me alive in gas? If so how hard would it to make it into a diesel propane hybrid for better mpg? (what do I expect to pay for propane mod?)

How much is to much to bid or spend I am looking for something cheap and reliable and I always liked the way older chevy trucks looked.

That looks like a great truck, looks like its not rusted at all, would check the frame for any. The engine even looks really clean, this was well maintained it seems and very low miles. Maybe it was covered and sat.

Dont worry you wont spend a dime on gas! but it will probably be a pretty decent deisel miser, the non-turbo 6.2 diesels were pretty good, especially if you open up the exhaust. Its not real strong, but is a good work truck. You would be in the 20s for MPG and good around town too.

hell yeah,, that'd be a good truck,, It's in Georgia,, No rust down there,, Low miles, too,, It is showing the vin in the auction,, do a vin search, and see what gears it's got.

Even so you dont think it would come out in the 20s for mpg? everyone says how much of a miser their old NA diesels were. Some of the guys with turbo 6.5s and 4.10 gears get 20mpg, as long as you drive 55mph.

Lol just relized it was in Georgia was browsing the barstow california area some how it skipped to a different state.

Most the stuff at barstow looks pretty rough...

they do have some D50 rams kinda ugly but hear great things about the engine that mitsubishi made for it.

These were pretty much the only stock that looked road worthy w/o too much effort there is a nice 350 ram there too but it is missing parts so..... not sure if I want to go down that rabbit hole.
