LBZ met a hill it couldnt climb today.

I was pulling my swather down a rock road winding through some mountains and canyons when i found a hill that literally stopped my truck cold mid way up. I dont have any scale tickets for the swather, truck, trailer combo but estimate high 20's to low 30's off of added known weight from all 3 (swather is too wide to fit on scales that way).

Leading up to the hill was a down hill sharp curve so i was going pretty slow and as soon as i made the curve i had ~50yd run at a good sized hill starting around 25mph. Before i hit the hill my truck hit 3rd gear (forgot to lock out in 2nd prehill) and the tranny limped 1/2 way up the hill. Of course after that i was stuck in 3rd and had to take 4 low and crawl through the hills for 3 more miles.

This tranny limping stuff is getting old...


I WANT MY 6.5 BACK ON THE ROAD! :cryin:
 
Not to mention that the more you limp it the weaker it's going to get. These are tough but not indestructable :nonod:.
 
I know. Im not upset about the truck at all but I like my 6.5 better for the job. I pulled that same hill with the 93 last year and same load, my 5 speed doesnt limp.
 
Thinking about selling the 06 K2500 and getting an 06-07 LBZ crew cab dually 4x4 or another brand of dually 4x4.

Just thoughts at this point because I am not satisfied with how this truck handles towing duty, I should have bought a heavier truck but my parents think i'm crazy buying one this big already.

If my 93 with new tranny, injectors, turbo, and some pump work handles the load better I might keep my LBZ just for a weekend warrior but thats an expensive weekend warrior.

My point exactly. 30k is over the GVWR of a new LML Dually. Methinks it's time to invest in a Semi Tractor and kingpin kit for your GN...
 
I'm not bitching about it... Not sure where anyone got that idea.

Just saying i need to get something bigger and I should have done that from the begining. I've got to be able to afford the truck and a semi isnt an option at the moment. A F550 or kodiac would be a nice improvement but finding what i want/need is hard to do and my family thinks its unneeded, just starting out I would need a cosigner for something that big and the family farm is the only place i would get it and i got a veto vote on a 1ton so a medium duty truck is probably out of the picture.

Not saying the 6.5 is a better/more capable truck but a dumb 5 speed and mechanical injected truck can do the job with less chit to break. We used Ol' Blue for the exact same job for 10 yrs and 300K miles. It was hell on the truck but it did it and thats what i need. Yes I expected the Dmax to do better than it did but i was bound to find a weakness and i found 2 that were to be expect the allison cant pull that heavy stock (no it is not designed to) and the suspension does not handle being overloaded (again it wasnt designed to).

Around here the dealer runs 1ton srw LMM trucks with the same load for delivery. So i am either going to buy a 3500,4500, or 5500 or build the LBZ to do the job better.

The only point to this thread was to say i had found the limit to my truck. I figured people here would understand that trucks are used to do a job and this one isnt cut out for the job i have (atleast not the way gm put it together)
 
A guy could pick up an old day cab single axle for the price of a dmax and be legal hauling with it too.

But hey, she's your baby! :D
 
My problem is I don't have credit for that stuff at the moment. Trust me, its been considered. Around here they leave farmers alone as long as we use enough chains.

not super clean, but if its local, probably rust free. wont help on gearing, but will help on suspension. maybe the ally has been worked hard all its life, so it may be broke into pulling hard, and may be good for a while yet. I can look at it after harvest if you want.

on a side note, GCWRs take into account the ability to maintain speed up a grade. IIRC stock 6.5ls are only rated for 15K GCWR, and I am sure we all pull more than that.
 
We likely paid as much or less for our 99 Freightliner as you did for your LBZ, TBH. $17,200 out the door. Sure it sucks on fuel compared to a pickup, but it's used when hauling up to 80k lbs is needed.

I understand your post, just trying to offer help to safely remedy your situation. ;)

I mean, maybe I'm being a prick now.... but right out the gate I would be looking at the weight I wanted to haul, and would have bought something new, or used, specifically to be able to handle that weight with some wiggle room above it.

Not buying a 3/4 ton truck expecting to tow above and beyond the GCWR for the vehicle.

After all, going up the hill is one thing, but it's not like once you go over the hill you have to stop or anything.
 
Tanner I'm understanding of your situation.

We just want you to be careful, hate to see a nice truck and a vital piece of equipment all wadded up (with you in it) at the bottom of a hill or something..

It's amazing what these newer pickups can do for sure.

Maybe you can offer (sacrifice) somebody a deal on a few trucks in your fleet in exchange for a decent farm semi.

Thanks i saw that 04 yesterday, not bad but I dont want an LB7. The kodiac wasnt bad but the trailer isnt wide enough.

I hear you there but I HAVE TO HAVE A COSIGNER and my family wouldnt sign for anthing over a 3/4ton and its mian purpose was to build my credit. I owe 12K on it now and I think I can get it sold for atleast that, pay off my loan, and be able to buy something else. Only problem is my banker also doesnt like financing MED duty trucks but since we go pig hunting together a couple times a month and he has seen my set up I might be able to get him on board.
 
On second look that 04 4500 looks sweet! lol Its not like it will be a daily driver, I have other trucks for that... If it was 4x4 it would be perfect but i bet i can make it work, if i can't make through those places in 4x4 I prolly dont need to go there loaded anyways.

Sell the bed for ~1000 flat bed for ~5500

Most the older med duty trucks had the Cat 3116 which are ok but most were setup rather 'conservative' - read- slow.

Friend has a Kodiak dump with one and the kitty doesn't build much HEAT, like, it took 6 months to burn the sticker off the new exhaust! :hihi: But it is very efficient, definitely a trade-off.
 
Nephew has an '07 LLY med duty for his toy hauler rig and says it has really amazed him the oomph it has on sandy/gravelly hills on back road camp places.
