Hello
I just purchased a 07 GMC Sierra 2500 147K that has been sitting for weeks. It wouldn't start for the transport guy but I got it to start after the 3rd attempt. Each time I would crank a short while (didn't want to overheat the starter) and the 3rd time it caught. After that it started fine but codes for the cyl 3 and 5 glow plug came on and code P0087 for fuel rail low pressure. I cleared them and drove for about 15 minutes and only P0087 came back on. It seemed to drive fine around town and when I accelerated hard to get on highway the exhaust blew some black smoke. I am new to duramaxes and see they have many sources of leaks and some say a need for a lift pump. Where should I start with this one.

Thanks

I would start with a dose of biocode to the fuel tank, and a new metal fuel filter(do not run the crappy WIX plastic ones). Also make sure the fuel cooler under the drivers seat area is clean as hot fuel will cause the fuel to bypass the high pressure fuel system to easily and set this code. Finally make sure the fuel lines under the truck are not kinked anywhere. LBZ's had alot of problems with the fuel lines where they went by the trans kinking over time, and setting the low fuel pressure code because the engine was being starved for fuel.

What Ferman says but first thing always with a P0087 is changing the fuel filter to rule out the simple thing first. The filter head could need a rebuild (seal kit) and the rubber fuel lines under the hood could be deteriorated internally.
And welcome to The Truck Stop!

What they said.

I just got my lift pump on and it feels like a new truck. You need to make sure the fuel system is healthy then adding a lift pump and pre filter will polish it off and be great for the truck in the long run.
