Just had the truck ecu flashed this afternoon. Along with the new power, I've noticed the diesel rattle is "a lot" more audible. Does the program advance the timing that much? I didn't get a chance to call back Westers as they were closed after I got home. (Wicked bad assed shop. It was like being in the mother of all wet dreams)

you have to manually advance the injection timing on these trucks so its how ever the fuel table that westers garage setup that is making it rattle.

The timing curve (Begining of fuel injection) thats different and it can cause changes to the sound of the engine.

All the different chips (Reflashes) have all sorts of little tweeks to the program that makes things work better.

Call westers and ask them, but I think all is well.

Welcome to the site, if you would add a signature line to let us know what flavor of 6.5 we are working with, and how it's set up.

Timing is wholly PCM controlled so depending on the tune in your reflash you may see some difference, the mechanical start of where timing begins can be influenced by physical position of the IP you will see some mention of that as TDC offset.

The factory setting is -.25 to -.75, many go to -1.5, to -1.94 "advance" but that requires a scan tool so you know where you are at as you advance TDCO. Did the shop "advance" TDC, if so then that will add "rattle" especailly on a cold morning, did you also get new injectors?

Edited my sig

Welcome my 97 friend. If you don't run synthetic yet, Do it next change. Much better specially colder/faster starts, and quieter engine. I think the squirter blocks really like synthetic. Also helps turbo spool better IMO.

Anyhow, how many miles on your 97?? I like to know. Thanks!

my engine cold wakes the neighbors down the road. it is LOUD, especially cold. sounds almost like it is imploding inside. The noise didn't start till the day after I met Bill Heath. HMM. need I say more. Ed
